Tabula Rasa

n. pl. tab·u·lae ra·sae (tby-l räs, -z)

1. a.The mind before it receives the impressions gained from experience.
b.The unformed, featureless mind in the philosophy of John Locke.

2. A need or an opportunity to start from the beginning.

Something like Tabula Rasa really makes me think. It got me thinking about how many times in my life, or anyones life, people would like there mind to be in that state of 'Tabula Rasa'. Freed from expierence, it would give us all a fresh start in life. Yet, would that really be for the best?

I mean, does the past not make us who we are, and to destroy that is to destroy ourselves? Yet, to destroy the past is to destroy all the pain and suffering we go through in life. I bet that sounds like a mighty tempting offer to many people out there. I mean, if there was a way to erase our memories, would you be willing to do so? If there was a machine that could just get rid of this memory or that memory, easy as pie, just like that..would you go for it?

Some would say that starting over new again is pointless, we are only setting ourselves up to relearn old wounds again and again. That experience is what allows us to deal with life, and that it is essential for all humans to have experiences in there lives . We must go through pain to get to the good, so they say. Yet, how many out there really care about working through the problems that arise in there life? Would it not be easier just to get rid of them, and then never have to think about them again?

Gets ya thinking don't it? Yet thinking is all any of us will do, because there is no machine that can erase memories. There is no easy way out ,yet, and for now we must all work through our problems to reach whatever 'answers' we need.

On an interesting note, there is a movie coming out called 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.' It is a movie being directed by Spike Jones and its about a 'not too distant future' where there is a machine that can erase peoples memories. It stars Jim Carrey and some bitch, I forget her name, and it sounds very interesting. Besides, if anyone has seen any of Spike Jones films, they know that his direction style is quite interesting, and should only add to what sounds like an interesting movie.

Ah wells, this is what happens when I start thinking, I babble and all this shit comes forth, take it as you will.
