I was looking at the meta prompts for hp_canon_love...

...not because I intend to write anything for it, but because I have a prompt list fetish.

And I saw this list of house/element correspondences in it.

Slytherin-water
Gryffindor-fire
Hufflepuff-earth
Ravenclaw-air

AND IT MADE THE PART OF ME THAT MEMORIZED CHARTS FROM BOOKS ON THE OCCULT IN FOURTH GRADE RISE UP IN INDIGNATION

BECAUSE I AM VERY ATTACHED TO THE COLOUR CORRESPONDENCES.

The houses have colours, and colours are associated with elements.  That is the single most straightforward association one could ever make.  I know JKR knew that when she chose the house colours.  This is, like, magic symbolism 101.

For the record, they are:

Slytherin - green - earth
Gryffindor - red - fire
Hufflepuff - yellow - air
Ravenclaw - blue - water

Look, I recognize that you could argue that the traits outweigh the colours, although I would disagree in the case of Slytherin (a much more earthy than watery house; earth favours practicality, good sense, steadiness and lack of excess emotion, where water favours intuitiveness, emotional connection, creativity, and wisdom) and probably also in the case of Ravenclaw (although air is associated with intellect.  Both air and water would be fair if not for the colours).  Hufflepuff, I concede, is probably the least connected to the element of its colour, and I blame that on air/yellow being the one left over.

I see this all over tumblr too and it bothers me.  Especially Slytherin.  Slytherin isn't even a tiny bit watery.  Just because the common room is underwater doesn't mean the has any water traits.

I am overly impassioned about this.

(PS.  Thank you all so much for your outpouring of love and support on the last post <3  It means so much to me, and I'll be responding to individual comments promptly ♥)
