Recently, I've been trying to make gaming fit in better with the rest of my life.

There are quite a few parts of gaming that leave me feeling unfulfilled. I spend too much time thinking about the stories and characters in my games, prepping for sessions, re-reading rules to understand the implications. Gaming tends to creep up and take over my ( Read more... )

I have an identity as a gamer, but I don't think that precludes simultaneous alternate identities. Right now I'm a grad student (albeit a procrastinating one!), in an hour I'll be a Trojan, tomorrow I'll be a gamer, on Tuesday I'll be grad student again. The priority of my identities shifts according to context, but all my identities remain.

Is simplification and redefinition a code for reprioritisation?

I don't think simplification is code. That's just becoming more aware of what types of games are going to fit best with the way my brain works.

Redefinition, well that might be. I think what I've done is subsume 'Gamer' into a larger 'Creative' role.

Subsuming Gamer under Creative makes a lot of sense.

Overall, your post reminded me off the highly-focused fun-maximisation approach of the guys at Godzilla Gaming Podcast. The pressure to condense the gaming awesome to make space for other aspects of a lifestyle is relevant to my interests :)
