WK1/IC1, District's Got Talent - Results

Apr 22, 2012 23:52

.................... and while it would have been interesting to read the judge's reactions to Liz's talent, her partner Josh didn't submit anything, so they were disqualified. Austin didn't submit anything, so he and Kari were disqualifed, too. Drew also rode the Fail Bus, swiftly eliminating his and Sarah's chances at winning.

Two former GLJers + a friend of mine that has no connection to the LJ gaming world comprise the Panel of Judges:

- Andrew, winner of both X and SURVIVOR: Saharan Edge
- Amanda, the polarizing player of TRIBES 2
- Katrina, my friend and former Drag mother

The three of them individually critiqued the submissions. They each ranked the individual talents 1-10, with the higher numbers meaning the person had a better talent. Here's how it went:

DISTRICT 7, Cassie & Robert

"Oh, you poor, poor girl. This is trying way, way too hard. Robert's is funny enough, I guess." (5 & 4) - Amanda

"The last of the submissions that I enjoyed, even though it felt very simple for this challenge. (And for Robert), I didn’t see you at all in this. How can I be sure it’s you? Not enough effort for me to give you anything higher." (6 & 1) - Andrew

"the graphic was nice, but is it enough to stand out and make a statement........? no. i do not like when people boast about themselves. do work, and let the fruits of your labor show your worth... not your words. as for robert.........everyone loves a good, drunken karaoke." (6 & 3) - Katrina

DISTRICT 6, Andrew & Liam
Talent = gay blogging
Andrew - http://betterthanyafaves.blogspot.com/2012/04/my-relationship-with-madonna.html
Liam - http://rhohk.blogspot.com/2012/02/football-for-faggots-gay-mans-guide-to.html

"I wrote an essay today and that shit is hard, so props to them for putting it out there." (8 & 9) - Amanda

"Unfortunately your partner stole your idea Andrew, and did it better. But, you still get high marks for getting me to read beyond the first few sentences. I laughed at Liam's. As a gay football fan, this was right up my alley, so I give you high marks for pandering to this judge." (7 & 9) - Andrew

"who doesn't enjoy a nice read? who doesn't love madonna? witty, spunky, and FUNNY!" (9 & 8) - Katrina

DISTRICT 4, Nick & Nicolle
Hello Judges,

The two things that i'm most passionate about are computers, and music. (Or, music and computers...depending on which day you ask me, that order sometimes flip-flops.) What is really fun is when i am able to combine those two interests together and make something really, really cool...and i maintain an online radio station that showcases my talent in both music and coding.

The stream is called Lovely Spam Music. The premise of Lovely Spam Music is very simple: it is a soothing computer voice reading spam to you, over music.

It is available at http://www.minazo.net/lovelyspam.html. I wrote all of the code for it; a tar archive of my code is linked off of the website, and also a .zip archive is attached to my submission. You can listen to the stream in your favourite streaming audio software, in either .m3u format (http://minazo.net:8000/spamcast.m3u) or .xspf format (http://minazo.net:8000/spamcast.xspf).

I have an instance of this code running on my server. When i see funny spam, i put the text of that spam in a directory on that server. (i decided not to automate the collection of spam, as i don't want the same spam, or tons of super-similar spams, showing up on the station.) The code does the rest. There is a shell script (run once an hour on my server) that takes the text of each spam, runs it through a text-to-speech engine, calls the Python script i wrote to compose the music, mixes the speech and the piano tracks, and places it on the online radio stream. The Python script implements rules of twelve-tone music (a twentieth-century, avant-garde form which eschews key--but in a structured form) to compose music to accompany each spam. The music is different every time the code is run; there are functions which randomize the number of simultaneous voices, the note lengths, the starting pitch, and the order of notes in each composition.

The result is wonderfully absurd. i love this as background music when i read, code, or sleep; i'll leave it to you to decide what wonderful things that listening to your recommended daily allowance of Lovely Spam Music can bring to your life.

Team A

Nick - http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_edit?video_id=6AyKDSPND8s

"A+ Nick, I would lol again. Nicolle...idk what your talent is, videotaping concerts?" (10 & 3) - Amanda

"This is a funny idea, Nicolle. Took me a while to get it working, but I appreciate the effort and I think you deserve to be higher than everyone else on this list. Nick, you get points for putting yourself out there and embarrassing yourself, I guess. Not everyone would do that. But, I can’t say that I enjoyed it." (8 & 5) - Andrew

"ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, both submissions were pretty boring to me. sorry!" (2 & 1) - Katrina

DISTRICT 2, Brian & Casey

"Brian, gif didn't load, but I bet you're gorgeous, honey. Casey, as a straight girl, that's not all that titillating, but it is impressive." (6 & 2) - Amanda

"I guess because it’s a higher quality gif than Casey's, but really… yawn. Try harder next time. Where’s the effort, Casey? You were spared the bottom spot by someone who put in even less effort than you, but this isn’t going to win you a challenge, I can tell you that." (3 & 2) - Andrew

"does brian model for goodwill, or am i missing something? casey's talent is nice, though!!!" (4 & 5) - Katrina

DISTRICT 1, Heather & Shaun
A few days ‘til bout time
I’m on needles and pins
the skaters will be skating
their wheels will spin
jammers digging hard
making scoring passes
fans yelling at refs
those zebras need glasses
syndicate and shade
bringing the fight
why, oh why can’t it be saturday night?

Some people think I'm only good at drinking. With my talent, I wanted to prove that my aptitudes are much more diverse than just that. I'm also good at drinking games.

Background: This is the final round of an 9 vs 9 Survivor Flip Cup game.

Rules of Survivor Flip Cup: The game starts like regular flip cup--each round, team members go one-at-time drinking their beer and then flipping their cup. After the cup is flipped, the next person on the team goes, and so on, until an entire team has finished. The twist with SURVIVOR flip cup? The losing team then competes in a flip-off where everyone flips at the same time, and the last person to successfully flip is eliminated from the team. But while the person leaves the game, their cup remains, and someone else must take their cup. The game continues until one team loses all its members.

This clip: This game has gone on for nearly an hour. It's neck and neck, with no team dominating. After beating my final teammate in a flip off, I am now the sole survivor of my team. My opponent is also the sole survivor of his team. It's now him vs me to decide which team will be crowned victor.

I'm on the right. Keep in mind each cup is filled with beer (no gag reflex for me!).

"A fucking poem, really? Umm, that flip cup game looks intriguing." (1 & 5) - Amanda

"I actually loved this idea, Shaun. Might steal it. The video was fully entertaining. No one outdid you, so you won by default. Wish you did get your video done Heather, but you submitted something so I guess I can’t bring you any lower." (10 & 4) - Andrew

"i love poems. good job! flip cup!!! and with survivor rules. very fun." (7 & 10) - Katrina

TEAM FLAGS

"Team A looks more fun. Shouldn't be as polished. Looks like Cassie made it, too." (2 & 1) - Amanda

"Love that you guys used the pictures. Font is appropriate. Slogan fits the game, definitely the better flag. Team B's is, but lacks picture and the same vibe that the other team's has, so I have to give them the win on this one." (2 & 1) - Andrew

"Team A looks happier!" (2 & 1) - Katrina

Congratulations, District 6! You are the winners of the first Immunity Challenge, and because of that, you are safe from entering the Cornucopia. Instead, you will need to brand one District to ENTER the Cornucopia, and fight to stay in the game.

Both partners need to send an e-mail (with the same District name) to battleoftheTRIBES@gmail.com no later than 6:59PM EDT on Monday, April 23rd. After that, the other Districts will vote to send another team. Happy hunting, m'lads.
