I'm almost crying with this story.
Autism has robbed my son of one of the things I hold most dear: self-expression. I want my Demetri to have it back. While I understand that testing in mice is far from testing a cure in humans, this gives me hope. It gives me hope that someday I can have a prolonged conversation with my son. It gives me hope that Julian won't have to be the "younger older brother" any more.
I can't wait, Demetri. I want you to tell your daddy about what you like and dislike, how you see the world, what you want to do when you grow up... everything.
Update: Demetri is negative for fragile X, so this doesn't represent a direct cure. I am still hopeful however that this will inspire other research avenues to find a cure for my son.
