Character: Mail Jeevas, of whom goes under the alias of Matt.
Fandom: Death Note
Personality:

An unsociable teen whom is rarely seen-- anywhere that others would be, and never on a video or voice feed is near constantly wearing a pair of orange-tinted goggles over his eyes, always has a cigarette between his lips, and would never be caught dead without a gaming console of some sort in his hands or pockets, nor would one be able to pry his precious PSP out of his cold, dead fingers. As far as most of the population is concerned, this is probably the most they would ever get to see of him, or his personality. There are only very few people who would ever see otherwise, unless he was desperate, needed something, lost his cigarettes due to being thrown into deme, desperately needing to charge his PSP, was busy fighting off deadly fairies-- yeah, definitely not going to be able to keep his face and voice a secret after being thrown into this world.

Even with his cigarette and video game addiction, Matt is quite intelligent. Those games definitely weren’t frying this brain at all. Out of the Wammy orphanage, he was ranked third, putting himself right behind Mello ( another child who was in the orphanage). However, unlike Mello, he never bothered to race for the top of the line. He didn’t need to be the best, didn’t want to be the top detective, or anything of that sort. He would much prefer living out his life playing out his video games, keeping to himself, and-- well, not bothering to worry over things like grades, school, or ranks. They weren’t things he considered important in life, not that he considered many things important. However, he did enjoy Mello’s company, from time to time. While the boy definitely wasn’t the most pleasant to be around, he was probably the only person Matt ever considered a friend, or anything close to that.

His social skills were ranked three out of ten in one of the official books; socializing isn’t something he particularly enjoys, or is very good at, considering how long he keeps his eyes glued to a screen of some sort. Games can stimulate just about any sort of situation depending on the game, computers are just fine for keeping in contact with others’ he needs to, and phones are just as good for that, too; why feel the need to go outside when he has everything he could ever need inside? However, he does keep to Mello well enough; grew up with the other boy inside of Wammy’s Orphanage, learned to deal with that temper of his, and considers himself the others’ best friend. Of course, dealing with Mello like that taught him how to take insults well enough, take the occasional punch, and how to give a few playful insults in response. He also has a bit of a dry sense of humor, too ( in canon, even saying something along the lines of “Since when were Japanese allowed to have such big guns?” when held at gunpoint. ).

Matt is through and through a gamer( in the anime and manga, he was seen holding a gaming console, as well as having quite a few cords around him, and in a character file, had video games under his likes), has been stuck on them since he was just a small child; they keep his attention span from wandering too much due to the amount of attention needed to keep to them, also. RPGs, Mario, Pacman, action games, horror games, strategy- whatever he could possibly find that he could keep to long enough to beat it- which wasn’t that long at all, really, especially for strategy ones. It’s more of an addiction than anything else, on the same level that he considers his cigarettes. Sure, it isn’t the chocolate or sweet food the other three known Wammy boy’s are addicted to- but just as rare as it is to see Mello without a bar of chocolate or L without sweets (which is very rare) it’s rare to see Matt without a cigarette between his lips, unless it’s in a place where he absolutely needs to put it out- in which case he would chew on a stick of gum, or something of that sort instead.

While his motivation to assist Mello when wanted is high enough- in reality, he doesn’t really care much about the world at all(this was stated in :How To Read 13) . Even with Kira wandering around killing off criminals and such, he didn’t care all that much about it. The world around him could crumble however it pleased, as long as he still had enough electricity to keep his games running, and as long as Mello was okay.

He’s uncaring about what goes on, for the most part. Whether or not Kira got caught, whether or not a murder got free, and even when L died, he didn’t show all that much concern. He was a great detective and all, but wasn’t one of the things on his list of important things; meaning, despite the initial “oh, he’s dead, that’s pretty sad” reaction, there wasn’t much. L was gone, there was no need to get all emotional or angry over it. Mello was angry over it, and didn’t like it, so when brought into the investigation over Kira a while later, he followed along well enough.

History:

There is very little canon history on Matt-- and considering he had a meager eighteen panels in the manga, and less than two episodes in the anime, there isn’t much on him in canon, either. From the bits and pieces that were given out- he came from Wammy’s Orphanage, was ranked in third in line of succeeding L (meaning, definitely not going to get to the top, considering the two whom were above him, not that he had any interest in any of that) was pretty careless, to the point of ruining some plans, and got roped into helping Mello with the Kira case, which in the end, resulted in him watching a few on the police force, listening to Misa Amane talk, and in the end, shooting a smoke gun in Takada’s general area so Mello could drive off with her. Then, he drove his car off, taking quite a few of Takada’s guards with him, was eventually cornered down by cars crowding all of the areas he could have used to escape, and was gunned down shortly after stepping outside of the car. The point in time I am taking him from is right before those bullets had been shot at him- leaving him unscathed on his entrance into Demeleier.

This is really all one really knows about his history and background, considering how vague his history is; however, going off of the fact even the mangaka said that Matt came into existence so Mello wouldn’t be lonely, it’s possible that he and Mello had a friendly relationship- or as friendly as one could get, with Mello. His relationship with everyone else was never explained, and no one knows where he came from before Wammy’s; he was orphaned, joined a orphanage full of gifted children, probably spent at least a few years there, if not more, became the sort who loved video games at some point, started smoking, probably before he was even old enough to legally do it, considering the addictive personalities the other geniuses’ from there seem to display.

Timeline: Seconds before getting shot to death.
Abilities:
• Intelligence. Being third-ranked in Wammy’s orphanage isn’t something just anyone could accomplish. While not at the top of the tower, he’s high enough that no one could call him stupid and have anything to back it up with.
• Surveillance. During his brief time in canon, he worked to obtain information on whomever Mello assumed as associated with Kira. Meaning, he had bugs set up to listen to Misa Amane, had a room close to where she was, and kept watch with cameras.
• Those games. Although in this particular game, it’d be unlikely he’d get to play with them often-- Matt is a skilled gamer, easily getting his ways through levels, figuring out the puzzles behind certain games, and those sorts of things. Which, thus, has built up to having a decent amount of patience for figuring his way through levels and particularly hard puzzles. This, along with dealing with Mello's temper, at least.

Inventory:
The clothes on his back (One vest, red and black striped shirt, pair of pants, underclothes, boots, and the goggles he wears constantly.)
One PSP(Play Station Portable) with two generic games.
Three packs of cigarettes + a lighter with half of the lighter fuel left.

Sample writing:

Fingers gripped hard onto the steering wheel, going over the plan inside of his head, the plan he and Mello had laid out days before. It wasn’t one that sounded particularly difficult, shoot a smoke gun in the general direction of Takada, make it seem like there was a plan to kidnap her, then use Mello’s connections with one of the girls’ guarding her to let him pick her up, while Matt drove the Chevelle out to escape. The scene. No, it was rather simple, actually. One that had less risks on him than a normal one would.

Mello probably wouldn’t survive, and knowing how these people’s minds worked, he doubted he would get out of it alive, either. They were both going to die for the cause, a cause that Matt wasn’t even sure if they needed to solve. Kira was killing off the baddies, didn’t bother with the rest of the world unless they were going after him. L was dead because of him, though- and that was something Mello wouldn’t forgive, he was sure. Matt definitely wouldn’t let his friend die alone, either.

Maybe once Near got the case all finished, he’d get a spot in the papers’, showing how he helped solve the Kira case, brought him to justice or whatever. Maybe he and Mello would even get a video game modeled after their experiences, and he’d get to be the cool sidekick that game into the game just when the hero needed him.

Then again, his identity would never he discovered around here, his name was well hidden, all records of him outside of Wammy’s house were gone- and Near probably wasn’t the sort who would make sure Matt got the publicity he deserved for his little stunt. Not that he or Mello had any sort of identification, or even a life that- anyone really knew of.

Ah’, well, the hero’s in his games never got the publicity they deserved for their hard work, either; perhaps a bit of reorganization at the end, but nothing more than that. Mello would have the satisfaction of taking down the villain, doing something Near wouldn’t do, giving him that last piece he would need.

Taking a long drag of the cigarette in between his lips, he started up the car, keeping one hand on the steering wheel while the other moved to grab onto the smoke gun on the passenger side seat. Here goes nothing.

Sample journal entry:
Alright. So, we’re not in Kansas anymore, and there are killer fairies wandering around. Apparently there’s no plumbing and everything looks pretty low tech aside from this thing, also, so I am assuming there isn’t a way to plug in a PSP or anything like that around here.

Has anyone figured out how to get some power into electronics? Not that it’d take me long to figure out on my own, but may as well leech off of someone else if possible. Also, are there any cigarettes around here? I’ve only got two and a half packs left, and don’t plan on going through them if they’re all I have. Anything with nicotine in it would work, actually. Going through withdrawals while thrown in a shitty place like this isn’t in my game plan.
