Happy Birthday to Me!

Oct 02, 2009 20:16

Today is my birthday, and is was a pretty good day even though I was absolutely pooped from the week of rehearsals and the NAC concert, not to mention work!  As always, Jim got me beautiful presents: three books (the new Margaret Atwood, the new Diana Gabaldon and the new Kathy Reichs), a necklace and earrings, two boardgames (one was the brand-new Martian Rails), a silver business card holder engraved with my name,  and some money to buy clothes with, which I will do tomorrow.  We were going to go out for dinner tonight, but postponed it until tomorrow night because I was so tired after work.  Some of my colleagues took me out for a terrific sushi lunch, so all in all it was a good day.

When I got home, I found another "birthday present" waiting for me in the mail.  Five contributors' copies of the latest issue of Alberta Views magazine, featuring my 3,000 word article about the history of the United Farmers of Alberta (now UFA Co-operative Limited).  I got the assignment in a somewhat flukey way; I was a judge at the National Magazine Awards this year and just happened to meet the magazine's editor, Jackie Flanagan.  Wearing my co-op hat, I pitched the story about UFA's 100th anniversary, expecting her to assign it to an Alberta journalist. Instead, she asked me to write it.  The article looks great, and my name's on the cover of the magazine, which is pretty cool. And they even spelled it (my name that is) right!
