TV shows last night: The Survivor premiere was full of obnoxious assholes including a tribe that is pretty much being run by unapologetic misogynists. See, Coach last season was obnoxious and kind of a sexist too, but at least he made for good TV, and his antics ultimately stemmed from a fairly benign sort of insanity and self-delusion - the Russell/Ben crew with their eyerolling and self-congratulation just makes me want to punch them both in the throat. We didn't make our picks yet because we barely saw anything from the winning tribe (and poor eustacio spent a good portion of the episode cleaning up an exploded Pyrex pan), but when we do, I suspect that there is going to be fierce competition over a very small number of contestants.

Castiel being like "I AM GOING TO FIND GOD AND THEN PUNCH HIM IN THE THROAT" was ridiculously badass, and the central monster-of-the-week thing of last night's episode was a really good idea and quite well-executed in how it kept me guessing, but everything before and after that was intensely bad. I'm irritated by this whole Sam and Dean splitting up thing even though the scene was very well-written and well-acted, because the one thing I did not want to see this season was Castiel taking Sam's place, which is where it looks like it was going from the preview for next week. But I still have a miniscule amount of hope that maybe this will allow Sam to come into his own and actually be Dean's equal again instead of getting captured and in trouble all the time. *eyeroll*

Actually, the thing that annoyed me even more than that was the bit with the amulet. That is really a perfect example of everything that's wrong with the writing on this show. Dean's amulet was something that fans had wondered about for a long time, and I remember in the early seasons there was a lot of speculation about how maybe it was some sort of badass magical charm or weapon or something and nobody could wait to find out why Dean was always wearing it. But the real explanation was much simpler than that and not paranormal in the slightest, and I found that to be one of the deftest bits of writing that this show had ever done - not only in how it played with the viewer's expectations and delivered a genuine surprise, but how it also underscored Sam and Dean's love for each other in a non-verbal and constantly apparent way. In my opinion, the pendant is much less interesting as this mystical artifact that was the only way to find God all along, than it was as a simple trinket that Sam gave to Dean as a child after being disappointed by John yet again and that Dean always held on to through everything. And it represents so well how the writers are afraid to just let things stand as a symbol of who the main characters are to each other - now everything has to have grand amazing metaplot significance like they were planning it all along. But then again, when did I ever expect subtlety from this show anyhow?

Also BTW I am going to take credit for the classic rock coming back to the show since I asked Eric Kripke to do that on my blog. ;p

I have a really crazy weekend ahead of me. On Saturday, for example, I am sextuple booked. That's right, six different groups of people invited me to do things with them. It remains to be seen exactly how I am going to resolve this, but I'm sure I'll figure something out for how to deal with this problem where I have way too much to do and not even remotely enough time to do it in.

I really, really, need a vacation. Too bad I am never going to get one.
