And now for a much-delayed plot summary. A lot of this is probably wrong, so let me know if I filled in any gaps wrong.

here. In their temporary quarters near the new Alliance military base on Osiris, the crew of Black Cat is rudely awakened in the pre-dawn hours by the sight of flashing lights reflecting on their walls, and the sound of many people moving around outside. They go to the windows and see a large number of emergency vehicles clustered around the apartment building next to theirs, and a decent-sized crowd beginning to gather. Nicolas throws on some pants and goes down to investigate. The officials there are tight-lipped, and question him as to whether he saw or heard anything during the night (he didn't, and neither did anyone else inside), but they say enough for Nicolas to learn that one of the residents of the building was apparently murdered in the night. This event only drives home Nicolas's insistence that no crew member should be walking around Osiris alone, but apart from that he doesn't think there's anything the crew can do, or that it is their business. He decides to proceed with the original plan of investigating the Dionysus Project, or rather, waiting for Alliance Internal Affairs to do it for them.
When everyone is awake, Nicolas dispatches the crew to various locations: Archer, Birgitta, Osiris, and Quinn will report to the Alliance base for a day's gainful employment. Siqin will find public Cortex access and use it to look into Nadia Vincent, so the crew can be aware of what they're getting into. Nicolas himself wants to hang around the apartment and keep an eye on whatever may be happening next door, since the news has not yet gotten beyond reporting the fact that a murder has taken place; Daisy will stay there with him. Things at the base are very normal despite its still-unusual placement, and Nicolas doesn't see much of interest either from his vantage point within the apartment. A couple of hours after everyone has left, he sees a body being taken out of the building next door and removed in an ambulance; after that, most of the police vehicles leave as well and only a crime scene investigation van remains behind. However, Nicolas is a bit concerned to notice a rumpled-looking, middle-aged man sitting on a bench nearby throughout this entire process; he's holding a newspaper and seems to be pretending to read it, but Nicolas can tell that he's keeping an eye on the building next door instead. Even more interestingly, Nicolas remembers him as one of the people who was standing around and gawking at the scene earlier that morning. Nicolas is a bit concerned about this, and points the guy out to Daisy while saying as much. Then, confident that nothing interesting is going to happen here, he swings by the spaceport to do some work.
In the meantime, Siqin is having some luck learning about Nadia Vincent. She's on record as a former Alliance soldier and Unification War veteran, and the record shows that she hasn't died, but any further detail is hard to come by as her personnel records have been sealed by Alliance High Command (though this in and of itself is quite telling). By exercising some less-than-legal avenues of information gathering via Cortex (and almost getting caught in the process), though, Siqin is able to learn that she currently resides at a nursing facility called Cedarvale, in a suburb of the city in which the crew currently resides. About this time, Luke (who is in the process of leaving the cruiser in orbit after a hard day of torturing) calls Siqin and gets filled in on what's going on.[1] From there they decide to collect Daisy from the apartment and go check out the nursing home, trying to see Nadia if possible.
Cedarvale Nursing Home is an attractive, walled facility that takes up the better part of a block. Security seems good enough that the crew doesn't want to test it, so Luke turns on the charm to convince the woman at the reception desk that he's a family member here to visit Nadia. He even convinces her to call him the next time anybody else shows up, claiming that there are some legal proceedings going on that he needs to be informed about. After that, Luke lets Siqin take the lead in directing the group toward Nadia's room.[2] But what they encounter is far from what anyone expected. Though Nadia's records show her age as being only about 40, she has the gnarled and weakened body of a much older woman and is wheelchair-bound - and that's before you get into her face. Daisy, Luke, and Siqin find her sitting in her wheelchair in a small private room with her back to the door, and when they walk around to look her in the eye after getting no response, they see that her face is horribly scarred and deformed from some sort of terrible trauma.
This is all too much for Daisy and she runs out of the room choking back screams.[3] But Luke and Siqin are made of sterner stuff and get about the business of questioning Nadia. Unfortunately for them, Nadia is completely unresponsive to any questions they ask or remarks they make; though she seems to be capable of hearing and seeing, and is certainly conscious, she's effectively catatonic. That is, until Luke starts delving into information from the heavily redacted Dionysus Project records that Jennifer Oliver brought aboard Black Cat a year or so ago and brings up the name "Maxwell Crane" - that is to say, Osiris. Nadia's response is to startle and begin trying to wheel herself out of the room at a slow but steady and persistent pace. Attempts to get in the way of her chair are met with equally slow but determined evasion. But when Luke grabs hold of the chair and tries to pull her back into the room, she quickly lashes out with a hand and slaps Luke in the face, leaving long, deep, bloody gouges in his cheek. Luke is absolutely livid at this (maybe because his good looks have been messed up?) but controls his temper and lets her leave.
With Nadia out of the room, Luke and Siqin decide to search it for clues to her identity, since they still don't know anything except that she gets violent at the mention of Osiris.[4] She does not have much in the way of personal belongings, but they do notice some interesting information on the medical charts at the foot of her bed: It seems that Nadia is on a wide array of prescription drugs, so her condition may not be entirely organic. Luke sends the list of drugs to Osiris, and after some ribbing ("Shopping, are we?"), Osiris tells Luke that the drugs are a variety of powerful painkillers, sedatives, muscle relaxants, and other such pharmaceuticals. None of these drugs are normally known to cause a catatonic or unresponsive state, though the dosages seem much higher than what is normal for a person of Nadia's size and age. Luke also asks Osiris again if he recognizes Nadia Vincent's name at all, but he says that he doesn't.[5] Because Luke is fairly certain that the nurses will notice them soon, and because (as he puts it) "I don't feel like hurting Nadia...at this moment" (to which Siqin responds, "That was a very Birgitta statement"), he decides they should leave. They retrieve Daisy from a waiting area where she is working to regain control of herself, and return to the apartment to tell the others about what happened.[6]
Back at the apartment, the evening news has come on, revealing a little new information about what happened the night before. It seems that the murder victim was a somewhat famous actress and singer, Jade Lotus, who appeared in various B-grade movies in the post-Unification-War period. The news reports can't give too many details yet, but they do say that the investigation is ongoing, no suspects are in custody yet although Jade's neighbors are being questioned, and (perhaps most interestingly) that the murder was surprisingly brutal in nature. But for the most part, the crew is more interested in hearing about what happened to Daisy, Luke, and Siqin at the Cedarvale Nursing Home. Nobody really knows what to make of that either. Nicolas says that the crew hasn't gotten what they need from the nursing home yet, and that they should continue staking the place out until the Internal Affairs people come by. Because there are still a few hours left in the designated visiting time, Osiris and Quinn volunteer to complete the shift for the night.
However, Luke will not be able to participate in the stakeout for the time being, since he's just received a message calling him back to the Alliance cruiser for further "GCRS-related duties." He takes his shuttle up that evening, both to tend to his wounded pride away from the crew's prying eyes and to see if he can use his Alliance connections up there to make this process go more quickly. Luke is getting frustrated by the dead ends he keeps hitting; as he puts it, "It's just annoying when you can't find any information...or when your information claws you in the face," and he hopes this will help. The crew is probably imagining him accessing some secret database, but instead, Luke is going right to the source: He gives Sekhmet a call on Blue Nile and, as usual, tells her everything about what's going on with the crew's investigation into the Dionysus Project.
As Luke goes into detail about the Dionysus Project and what the crew has learned, Sekhmet looks a bit agitated, injects something into her neck, and tells Luke that although she will acknowledge the reality of the Dionysus Project as a tragic and perverse event that was allowed to happen during the years of the Unification War, the past is past. The Alliance has already dealt with the project's perpetrators through the correct channels of justice, and Sekhmet can say with certainty that if the project is continuing as the crew has come to believe, it is not happening with the official sanction of the Alliance. Though Sekhmet appreciates the crew's concerns, investigating the Dionysus Project is not a good use of Luke's time, because people within the Alliance who are more qualified to perform investigations can certainly take care of it from here. Sekhmet gives Luke a direct order to cease all investigation into the project unless she tells him otherwise. But Luke decides to take this even further. He suggests that he could use his knowledge and influence to plant a false trail for the crew of Black Cat to follow, since this would keep them out of trouble while Luke conducts more important business seeing as how they will probably be less receptive to orders. Sekhmet agrees to Luke's plan, and says that she will help him as possible to plant evidence.[7] As the two of them conclude their discussion, she also mentions in passing that Luke should avoid dealing with any employees of Blue Sun during his business on Osiris - though she won't say why.
Meanwhile, Osiris and Quinn have found a convenient small park across the street from the Cedarvale Nursing Home and have settled down on a bench to watch the doors while talking about life, the universe, and everything (as they tend to do). But just before the end of visiting hours, Osiris notices a familiar face approaching the visitors' entrance: It's that rumpled-looking man who was sitting on a bench across from the crime scene earlier that morning. Quinn and Osiris decide that they absolutely must know what he's doing inside the nursing home, and follow after him. Just as they had both worried and expected, he's headed straight for Nadia Vincent's room. But when Osiris and Quinn burst into Nadia's room, what happens next is something no one could have anticipated.
Though both Osiris and Quinn recoil a bit at Nadia's hideously scarred body, Osiris is more stunned to realize that he remembers her. Her name isn't familiar, but by sight he recognizes Nadia as one of the patients at Dionysus Hospital who he was personally responsible for torturing in order to prove his Reaver-ness. Osiris's response to this is to go through an instant mental break. He reaches into his doctor's bag, pulls out a pair of gloves, and snaps them on while saying, "Now, Nadia, why don't we see about that leg?" (referring to the reason she was originally brought to the hospital - rehab for a leg wound sustained in combat). When Nadia hears this, she begins to scream in a decidedly inhuman tone and launch herself out of the wheelchair and at Osiris, clawing and biting at him madly as he struggles to keep her at arm's length.
Quinn and the mysterious man react to these events with somewhat greater calm. The man grabs for the "call nurse" button and starts pressing it repeatedly, while Quinn manhandles Nadia away from Osiris and into the room's bathroom, where she locks the door behind them. Faced with the disappearance of his crazy-making stimulus, Osiris realizes the trouble he's in and responds by throwing Nadia's wheelchair through the window and running away. At this point in time the nurses show up, sedate Nadia, and start asking what happened. The man flashes a badge that gives his name as Detective Hector Marsh of the Osiris Police Department and tells the nurses to keep an eye out for Osiris, even as Quinn spins a pretty believable falsehood about how she and Osiris came to be at the nursing home in the first place anyway. He then questions Quinn more directly, but she deflects most of his questions with a combination of feigned wide-eyed innocence and good old-fashioned ignorance. The two of them part ways with Quinn returning to the park (since she hardly knows what else to do right now) and Marsh beginning to search the nursing home grounds to see if he can figure out where Osiris may have gone.
Osiris, for his part, has taken refuge in a nasty dumpster until he comes back to his senses and tries to get farther away. Unfortunately, he runs into Marsh on the way out. Given that Marsh has just witnessed Osiris engaging in the act of assault and vandalism, he has plenty of cause to arrest Osiris and take him to the local jail. Upon seeing this, Quinn immediately gets on the train and returns to the apartment to tell the others what has happened - but as it turns out, Osiris uses his one phone call to call Nicolas and tell him what's happening, so the poor captain gets it from two angles. Knowing that he's way in over his head, Nicolas calls Luke on the cruiser and pleads with him to help out; though Luke knows he won't be able to come down personally, he can at least send another lawyer to represent Osiris's interests, put down Nicolas and Quinn as paralegal types so they can accompany the lawyer during the interrogation that Luke figures he won't be able to prevent, and pull as many strings as possible to get the charges dropped. For most of the crew (who are growing rather tired of Osiris's antics) this will be good enough - except for Quinn, who can't rest until she returns to the police station to drop off a set of clean clothes for her garbage-covered, locked-up husband.
1 - Luke, after learning about the murder next door: I thought they put you up in a nice neighborhood.
Siqin: That was what was advertised.
Luke: Maybe I should complain.
Noel, OOC: I need to call down a tactical strike on this corner of the block. Your target is a man reading a newspaper.
2 - Luke: What do we do now, Siqin?
Siqin: Interesting that you should ask me that question now.
Luke: I knew what I was doing before.
3 -
gamerchick Daisy turns around, puts her hand over her mouth like she's going to be sick, and runs down the hall.
Noel: You walked in on old people sex.
4 -
tankmancr: I'm going to look around the room for any personal effects.
dayzdark: Preferably gold ones.
Noel: Does she have any gold?
dayzdark: That's it. Stealing jewelry from nursing homes.
5 - Luke: Osiris didn't recognize Nadia's name.
dayzdark, OOC: It was a big hospital. I didn't know all the torture victims.
peloria, OOC: You just buried them all.
dayzdark, OOC: Nah. Only the dead ones, mostly.
Noel, OOC: Gotta bury 'em all.
6 - Daisy: What happened to you?
Luke, annoyed: I'm apparently joining the same club as Osiris and Nadia are in. This is some kind of initiation ritual or something.
Daisy: Sorry I ran away.
Luke, sarcastic: That's alright. The claw marks probably look better on me.
7 - I promise you that all I wanted to do here was set up a really awkward situation where Luke's orders from the Alliance got in the way of his orders from Nicolas. But good old
tankmancr has always got to take things one step further...
