A little belated, but whatever.

Last weekend freeimprov, barthir, Faron, and I saw Quantum of Solace. It was good, but pretty incomprehensible to me since I hadn't seen Casino Royale yet, despite getting a spoileriffic summary from freeimprov the night before. Watching the DVD of Casino Royale that same night helped. That movie was seriously awesome, particularly the opening chase which I actually had to rewind and watch again as soon as it was over because it was just that cool. The dialogue between Bond and Vesper was also remarkable; I can honestly say they don't write it like that anymore, since I can't remember the last time I heard that sort of sharply barbed romantic dialogue outside of a classic film. (Plus it made me realize that my next modern-day tabletop character is going to have to be a parkour practitioner - dayzdark please run something nWoD or UA-ish when Mage is over so I can do this!*)

Although I greatly enjoyed Casino Royale, I have to say that I miss the days when things like continuity and realism were anathema to James Bond movies (though I did not generally care for the Pierce Brosnan films). The credits are still full of bad music and semi-tasteful nudity and that makes me happy, but I really miss the standard progression of car chase with no bearing on what follows -> opening credits -> Moneypenny -> silly gadgets -> lots of partially clothed women with bad puns for names, with whom Bond has tons of sex -> villain's inescapable trap -> silly climactic battle -> Bond and surviving Bond girl have sex in an uncomfortable place (you mean like the back of a Volkswagen?), with all of that sewn together with car and boat chases whenever people start talking too much.

And then it turned out that dayzdark has not seen any James Bond movie except for Moonraker, which is sort of like having "Spock's Brain" be the only episode of Star Trek that you've ever seen. It's awesome in its own horrible way (IN SPACE LOLOLOLOL) but not at all representative of the series at large. If I were going to make an Educate dayzdark About James Bond list of five movies to inflict upon him, it would probably look something like this:

Dr. No
Goldfinger
Live And Let Die
Octopussy
GoldenEye

with an honorable mention to Thunderball.

Dear readers of this journal, what James Bond movies should we make dayzdark see, and why? Who was your favorite Bond? (I can never make up my mind about that, but Pierce Brosnan is at the bottom of my list mostly because I could never take him seriously as Bond after I saw Mars Attacks!) Discuss with me, please.

* This is the same kind of stupidity that inflicted Maggie upon the world. I was home for the summer and trying to get in the head of this Dreamspeaker I was thinking of playing for tankmancr's game, and then I went to watch xXx and saw the avalanche scene and my brain went, "hey, Entropy and Time and Life, I should play a stuntperson." Come to think of it that's probably why I liked xXx; it's the closest thing to an old-school Bond film that there's been in ages. And just like I do with xXx I must always watch a Sean Connery or Roger Moore Bond film when it is put in front of me regardless of how many times I've seen it or its quality.
