shows about monster killing FTW

All right, CSI finale, what the hell.

So I pretty much have no idea what the frack went on in the last 30 seconds of last night's CSI episode. As near as I can tell they seemed to be implying that Grissom and Sara have been in some sort of torrid secret love affair for god knows how long now, maybe since two seasons ago (since that was, of course, the exact moment at which a million horrible NC-17 GSR fanfics were born). Now of course I'm not gonna argue about the fact that Grissom and Sara belong together, since peloria and I have pretty much been saying that ever since we started watching the show. I also understand why if they hooked up they would go to great lengths to keep it a secret, seeing as how Grissom is technically her work supervisor and kind of sexually repressed and all. My problem is, as peloria pointed out, that if there has been something going on all season long, we didn't get to see the best part!

The most fun part of any unrequited TV character relationship is the fact that it's unrequited. The moment that actual sexing happens there is a very high probability that the show will jump the shark. However, if it's going to happen, the second most fun is getting to see what the incident is that finally detonates everything and causes the relationship to progress. Not actually showing that part is cheating, and also kind of a kick in the balls to all the people who have been really into GSR from the beginning. And if there's not a damn good explanation for this the show is going to suffer as a result. I mean, the X-Files essentially made this same mistake with Mulder/Scully and look where that got the show.

If that is what has happened, and the end of last night's episode was neither a dream nor a fantasy nor something else weird, the only way that I can conceivably deal with this is if there are FLASHBACKS. Copious amounts of flashbacks to all the stuff we missed. If there are sweet delicious flashbacks provided in the future, CSI, then maybe I can find it in myself to forgive you. But right now you are going to go sit in the corner, where you will remain until September.

Okay, so the bad news may be that last night's CSI had me scratching my head, but the good news is that peloria and I may have found something to take its place if it does in fact jump the shark. Last night we watched the first three episodes of Supernatural that I had BitTorrented, and holy crap is that show unbelievably entertaining. Awesome concept, great characters, pretty good writing, some good scares, excellent soundtrack (how did they get the rights to all those Black Sabbath songs anyway?), exceedingly hot lead actors - two six great tastes that taste great together. And because I am a tremendous dork I have also got to point out that up until this point, the basic concept is also quite Hunter-y. There's the requisite tragedy and darkness in the backstories as to how the Winchester family got started fighting monsters, and although the central concept is a little bit sillier than your average Hunter game (like the big box o' fake government credentials - although those get them in trouble even more than they help) I appreciate how it gets dressed up with more realistic touches (i.e. the fact that Sam and Dean have to fund their hunting by running credit card scams). There's also the fact that solution one with every monster they meet is, "yay, I hope it's corporeal so we can go kill it!" Zeal to the core.

Unfortunately, Supernatural is on the air directly opposite CSI, which means that come September peloria and I will have a choice to make. Although if channel 23 continues to be weirdly resistant to being tuned in in our living room, I guess the choice is made for us (specifically, we watch CSI at 8, I tape Supernatural on the TV in my office where the signal comes through perfectly, and we watch the tape at 9). My TV watching schedule is definitely going to get shaken up in the fall, then. I'm going to dump CSI: New York (which has been slowly losing my attention for a long time now) and give Heroes a try instead, because that sounds like a majorly awesome show. Also I'm going to think really hard about whether I want to continue paying any attention to American Idol, because it's never quite grabbed me the way it did the first season I watched. Then again, maybe I'm just saying that because at this point my favorite contestant has been eliminated and I always end up losing interest in it this late in the season anyway.

Okay, that's enough rambling, time to get back to work.

ETA: Oh, and today I also finally thought to check my grades. Straight A's, baby, giving me a 4.0 for the whole of grad school. Surely some kindly employer will soon take pity upon a smart person like me and deign to give me a jo(r)b for the fall?

csi, grad school, supernatural
