[When the video flickers on, Matt is shown sitting in the middle of the floor. His head is lowered, eyes partially hidden by both the angle and his goggles. His expression isn't his usual neutral one. It's...blank. There's a dripping sound in the background, like a leaky faucet. Matt's lips move a few times before words are finally formed.]Always

Fuck....
[He swallows]
Matt, hold on, I'll be right there!

Take your time.
[There's no need for him to see the guy making preparations to get rid of her body, the body of a woman that they've both watched for nearly a week now.]

She got her wish.
[Matt murmurs the words, eyes averted from the door to the extra bedroom that's open and hanging by one hinge now. He wants to reach out to Mello, take him by the shoulders and turn him away. Matt can disconnect himself from things that Mello can't. His emotions are too strong for it. But his will is even stronger. Matt knows he wouldn't allow himself to be turned away.]

[Mello's shaking, one hand locked around his rosary. The scene wouldn't have been too shocking if he didn't know her, if he didn't feel so protective, it would have just been another crime scene. Training as a successor had numbed him to most gruesomeness and his life in the Mafia had done away with the rest.]
He wanted her to miscarry. All she wanted...he took everything from her....
[Rage tightens his features and his fist. One hand is hanging at his side, the other is squeezing the rosary to hard it's surprising he isn't bleeding.]

Did the best she could.
[He won't elaborate. Mello can probably fill in the blanks -- about how she tried to protect something other than herself, how she might've survived the attack if she hadn't. Matt wants to add that they did the best that they could too. But he can't find the words. He just listens to the sounds in the neck room -- the closing of a closet door, the dragging of a large wardrobe in front of it. Matt still feels numb and he doesn't like it. It's not that he's not used to the feeling...he's just not used to it when Mello's beside him.]

[He removes is rosary, something his only does to wrap it around his hand and pray. There's a moment of silence in which Mello closes his eyes and clasps his shaking palms]
Saints of God, come to her aid;
Come to meet her, angels of the Lord.
Eternal rest give unto her, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon her.
Amen.

Masato comes out of the room, grabbing a trash bag before he starts stripping his clothes off and stuffing them into it. Matt snorts softly. Such a typical way of getting rid of evidence. He goes into the bathroom next, and before long the sound and steam of the shower pours from the bathroom door.]
Maybe this will finally bring an end to it.
[They'd seen all they could see...how much longer would they stay in this strange state?]

[He puts his arms protectively around Matt now that Masato is absent, pulling him close.]
You should have gotten me, you should've left, you didn't have to see this and you didn't have to be alone.

[He sounds tired, knows that Mello feels it too. Gradually he starts to move, something close to life flowing through him when Mello's arms go around him.]
Knew you'd want to know what happened to her. We both would. No reason we both had to watch though.

You didn't have to.
[His rosary is still in his hand as he clutches Matt close. He doesn't know what to say. Sorrow and anger are coursing through him, his usual instincts to investigate are being overwhelmed by sickening anger and the lump of sorrow in his throat]

[No matter what he did or didn't do, what they did or didn't do, it was going to play itself out. Matt takes a deep breath before lifting his arms, which have felt so heavy during it all, and sliding them around Mello.]
Don't worry about me, okay?
[The faintest of smiles crosses his lips when he says that. It's nice to know that someone finally gives a shit about him, no matter the circumstances surrounding it.]

[He tisks, feeling bad for calling Matt an idiot especially right now.]
[He hopes that someone's heard all this. That someone'll call the cops. That Masato will get what's coming to him but... Ai never left the apartment as it was, if Masato was careful he might never be caught. And he could escape, flee the town, flee the country and start all over again with another woman in another place and Ai would be left unavenged and decaying wherever her lover decided to throw her.
“The dead cannot cry out for justice; it is a duty of the living to do so for them.”
Mello couldn't remember who said that but he'd always believed that quote. That was his job as a detective. That was his calling. And he would give Ai a voice if he could if he wasn't stuck here, a living ghost. And even when it returned to normal...what could he do? The case was cold and there was no way out of this Hell.]
Fucker's going to get away.
[His hands clenched at the material of Matt's shirt]

He's quiet and still, silently agreeing with Mello when he says that Masato will literally get away with murder. Matt believes it too. But he struggles to find something, anything that will be of comfort to the other. And though he doesn't really talk about God, doesn't believe there is one, he knows that Mello does.]
Well...he still has that higher power to answer to, right?

[Mello pauses, swallows, and looks at Matt.]
Those who do evil will be punished. Even if they seem like they get away it in life when they die there souls will be tortured for all eternity without hope of respite. What happens to someone in Hell is opened to interpretation, personally, I think, there's no way to understand the horrors of Hell. There's no way to anticipate it.
The torture will be constant and fluid, once something becomes mundane it becomes something even more horrible and all the while you're forced to relive your sins not as the sinner this time but from the outside or as the victim. Again and again and again.
Everything you hate, everything that makes you mad, everything that makes you want to fucking break things, it's all around you, always happening.
And the whole time...through whatever physical torture you're enduring...you're living your sins from this new angle. You don't even have to close your eyes.
[He pulls the redhead close again, wondering if he's ( ... )

So what's it like where she is? The other place.
[Heaven. If anything can cheer Mello up, it should be that. But that doesn't mean it will.]
