Quite honestly, I don't think it's worth worrying about. There are plenty of negative stereotypes about male gamers as well, some of which you have evoked in your own article.

Also, there are a lot of girls out there who, unfortunately, give the rest of us a bad reputation. I'm talking about the actual camwhores who get what they want through sex (or promises of sex) and end up getting whatever they want. I've played MUDs with those kinds of girls... they'd get into elite pvp clans purely through their feminine charms whereas I had to grief the hell out of the leaders of those clans before I could even hope to get in. If this guy (I'm assuming it's a guy, though you can never be sure online) has only encountered girls who fit the stereotypes that he describes, I can understand him being pissed at the whole gender.

I think there is a perception of gaming as a boys club.

Moreso, how do you know who you're facing off against is a man or a woman, generally? My own screen name is DKH- that doesn't really give any hints. Origamifrog? I dunno.... That doesn't give any hints either ( ... )

What about in rpgs where there are male and female avatars? I mean I know its ludicris to assume that females always play female avatars, and vice-versa, as much as it is rediculous to assume that when one plays AT on the USA side in bf2 that they're black, but still female avatars in WoW, RO, FFXI, etc will continually get gifts of gold, red pots, heals, and will also get hassled by others.

*ludicrous

and female characters do get hit on, offered gifts, etc. I don't accept them, not from strangers (my friends can give me whatever they want!).

Of course, on FFXI, you can almost always assume that a mithra (the sexiest -sic- race in the game) is really a guy.

The mithra thing is a myth!
I know a few guys who play mithra characters, but I know as many, if not more, females who play mithra. If you toss aside all the mithra who are clearly mules, or have the stupidest names/behaviours, then you probably do have more female player mithras than male.

Maybe it's a server by server thing, because on Fairy, there's quite a few manthra.

I'm against women gamers. But I'm also against men gamers. I'm for gamers period. I don't give a crap what you are- let's game.

exactly!

i see no difference between female and male gamers. i only discriminate between good players and idiots. and both genders have more than their fair share of idiots :P

Not sure about the fair share part... There seems to be a whole lot more idiots on the male side. Or it might just be demographics.

origamifrog March 27 2006, 22:18:25 UTC
If the majority of gamers are male, it does make sense that most of the idiots are also male...

But only proportionally.

yeah that was how i meant it :) it would be unfair to say a statement like that without considering the proportions.
there are a relativly small number of female gamers that i know of. mostly i don't care about gender, but hearing them on vent/ts/live makes it obvious :P

either way, people are people. and i think most of them are asses. but it has nothing to do with gender :P

Idiots on one side, braggarts on the other? Every second reply to this post seems to be "I'm a girl and I'll kick his ass at counterstrike!" and the like. Given that I don't judge anyone's skill on anything other than what they display in the game, I'm tired of both sides being full of it.

True that the girl gamer attitude in this case is not reflecting on them in a positive light...

pretty much my point :P both sides have their idiots. and i do tend to include unchecked egos in the idiot category (maybe i should say idiot/asshole :P), as well as names like 'eatmypoo' >.>

but meh. i play for fun. i don't see competition about pwning, but as self improvement. i tend to judge people more on their attitude and skill in the game. and skill can be improved, under most circumstances.
