It's interesting how a supposedly anthropological discussion rejects the cultural relativist view - while I understand that it's the easier path, is it impossible for the military mind to still retain the strength of his own cultural convictions while yet understanding others', especially since many of the fundamental military values are universal? On the other hand, I suppose great intelligence and empathy can be somewhat detrimental attributes in military commanders too, as a greater appreciation of the cost of victory could lead to hesitation on the field - a deadly consequence.
