Dream's office, over the weekend

Jan 07, 2006 16:30

Dream's lesson plans are done, for the moment, and he reviews them a final time as he sits in his office.

Looking at his preliminary class rosters, he is pleased to see most of his classes will be small groups, though of course there is room for more.

He hopes the capable-sounding girl who asked to be a TA will stop by.

Zero knocks at Professor Dream's door. "Er, Professor, I had a quick question."

Dream rises from his chair. "Miss Hopeless-Savage. Hello. What could I help you with?"

"I've been accepted Early Decision to film school, provided I, y'know, meet the university's requirements for enrollment. One of them's, er, two semesters of the same foreign language. So, I've taken Cat, and now I'm signed up for Creature Languages--hopefully I'll get in. Can I get some sort of paper saying those are a sequence?"

"Of course. Your backing in Cat will be more than helpful in Creature Languages, and I expect to do a unit on jungle cats next semester," Dream says, steepling his fingers slightly. "Would a letter from me suffice, or is this something we need to speak with Principal Smith about?"

Zero finally sits down. "I really don't know, sir. I'm a little worried they might not even believe they're actual classes, in which case I'd be screwed unless you offer French 102 at some point. Worst comes to worst, they'll probably let me test for proficiency in Chinese, and I can get the sibs' boyfriends to tutor me..."

She hesitates, tugging on a lock of hair, before saying, "I guess we should speak to the Principal. I know there's been a lot of turnover in the faculty, to the point that I don't know if Fandom High meets the Virginia graduation requirements now. I don't know if it even has to, this being...not exactly a normal school."

This draws a sigh from Dream. "The problem you describe is present, and it is larger than I am. I recognize many of the classes offered may not satisfy traditional educational needs in the home worlds of many students, and I too am guilty of this."

His words are careful, measured.

"As an immediate step, I suggest you call the college and find out if they would be willing to accept creature languages with my word. If they are not, I could offer you French as an independent study credit, which should satisfy them. The work would need to be largely self-directed, but that worked nicely for Ms. Frasier's pursuit of Indo-European last term."

"In the longer term, my suggestion would be that you talk to other students and come up with a list of academic requirements that are not being met by the course catalogue for this term. We could then take that to the principal for possible remedy."

"Yes, of course. I'm sorry to throw all this at you, Professor. I'll call my enrollment officer on Monday, then get back to you. Thank you for your time."

"Never be afraid to approach me. As your teacher, it's my responsibility to help you." He isn't smiling, exactly, but his expression is almost pleasant. "I will see you in class Monday."
