The unintentionally funny part about this was that I was rewatching Spartacus Vengeance and Spartacus War of the Damned when I read this - so I went from watching other gladiators in their gear to picturing Peter and Sylar in gladiator get-up in an arena. It was very trippy!
Having Matt be the Roman in charge was clever and trippy as well, he fits in that setting, as that character and it/he is scary in the fact that Matt is invading not only Peter's dreams and possibly pulling the strings of Sylar's mental world that they live in.
That makes me wonder what the lions are, then. Their obstacles and issues or fears? Of course, they had to work together and share (swords of all things).
Sylar would be mighty hairy in that outfit! Considerably more so than your average gladiator on screen. Peter would enjoy it.
Sylar (grimacing and continually plucking at the shoulder pads).
Peter: What?
Sylar: It's catching on my chest hair…And this thong keeps riding up.
Peter (laughs, then shuts up at Sylar's look; helpfully adding): It's not a thong.
