Bates Motel is pretty cool
Just saying. I've watched the first four episodes and while it's been pretty emotionally jarring to me twice, it's really riveting, intense, and suspenseful. Now that I've finished with Far From the Tree, I've moved on to reading Bloch's Psycho. In it, Norman Bates is a middle-aged fat guy and a far cry from the complicated, sympathetic character we see in the TV show. I'm 35 pages into the 127 page story. It's fascinating how much inspiration can be drawn from so little. Bates Motel is derivative from the Psycho movies, which are derivative from Bloch's little story. Fanfic of fanfic. It's a pity so many people deride fanfiction and derivative works as lesser things. We're all derivatives of our parents, appearing inexperienced, incomplete, and sometimes inept in comparison because we're a rough draft (or maybe just an outline!) being compared to a published work.
