I've been LJ-quiet for the last two weeks. It's been busy in other sectors of my life. I'm still not writing much of anything, so here's what I've been doing instead:
They say for fitness, weight loss, etc. to last, you need to pick a lifestyle goal that makes being fit a part of who you are, rather than a "lose 30 pounds and then I'm done" thing.
I thought long and hard about what I wanted to be and eventually I decided I wanted to be badass.
The Zumba class is just a bunch of choreographed dancing. Everyone stands in rows facing the same way and at the head of the class, the instructor leads the dance. The first session is frustrating because the moves come fast and unpredictably, but after a couple more sessions, you get coordinated, more endurance, and practiced. It's the same moves each time, though our teacher has started adding in little extras (bouncing, hops, certain arm embellishments) as we've gotten better.
For me, it costs $5 per session. Cheaper than a movie ticket.
I did it for about 3 months last year...but from DVD's instead of classes. I really loved it but I should really go to classes myself as it gets to the point of being to hard doing it on your own.
Although, with DVD's you can go over some of the steps to get to grips with it.
I think I really needed some decent dance shoes though, as it was difficult to do those steps in either bare feet or trainers!
Oh my gosh, yes! Good shoes make such a difference. So do decent workout clothes. Personally, I find I can't get up the resolve to exercise by myself more than sporadically, but in the class surrounded by others, my desire to fit in and gain approval kicks in even though no one is really looking at me. I don't think I could ever do it all by myself.
