I don't think Peter is entirely unaware of his looks, but I figure like most people, when he looks in the mirror he sees hair out of place, a discolored spot here, a missed-shaving spot there, a crooked lip, etc. That is, he sees his faults, whereas other people see everything at once and the good definitely outweighs the bad.
