Movie review: Dirty Deeds

I finally got around to watching another of Milo Ventimiglia's movies: Dirty Deeds. I was watching the recent additions to means2bhuman's YouTube playlist and discovered she had the whole dang movie on there! Perfect thing to watch while I was skinning sweet potatoes and fiddling around the kitchen.

The movie came out in 2005, just a year before Milo ended up in Heroes. The IMDb summarizes it thusly: An American Pie-like teen comedy in which a high school senior tries to become the first student in years to complete the Dirty Deeds, an outrageous series of challenges that must be completed by the Homecoming banquet at 9 a.m. I haven't seen American Pie, but I'd agree with the synopsis. Milo plays the high school senior in question, who steps in to do the deeds to protect a freshman, whose older sister just happens to be the brainy beauty whom Milo wants to impress.

This might date me, but I thought of Milo's character (Zach Harper) in the movie as a young, starter-version of Fonzi from Happy Days. He was cool, charming, always knew what was what and what was going on, and a lot of things just worked out for him by lucky coincidence. Didn't hurt that they're both Italian, wearing black jackets, and have awesome hair.

I found the main plot with Milo, his love interest, and his antagonists to be fun and entertaining. The side plot with the rave at someone's house while they were out of town was irritating to me - pointless destruction and dangerous, unsupervised party atmosphere portrayed as good, clean fun - always bothers me. It included a freshman (14 or 15 years old) almost having sex with a senior (17 or 18 years old). Had this been an older male and younger female, audiences would have seen it as creepy and threatening, maybe a bit rapey. In a lot of areas, it would be statutory rape. But the movie featured a younger male and older female, so this was shown to be the (potential) fulfillment of a sexual fantasy. I dislike that. Another thing I disliked were the gratuitous boob shots at the party. The whole party thing was unnecessary and detracted from what was otherwise a good story.

But, hey - it had Milo in it, looking good. For those who have seen the clip of Milo screwing a loaf of bread (at 8:30)? Yeah? This is the movie it's from. :D
