For such a good guy, Peter didn't have much happiness in his life. He had like one moment with Caitlin before everything went to hell. All the rest of the time, people thought he was crazy, or he had to worry about a killer on the loose, or whether he was going to blow up the city accidentally, and then was in jail or on a mission with Adam, then he was a terrorist and disowned by his brother, power-drained by dad, beating himself up for the next couple years ... He had a miserable run there, in the show. Simone dumped him, his mentor abused him, his mother, brother and father all betrayed him. The one person he was romantic with who didn't turn against him, he accidentally stranded her in a future that doesn't exist anymore.

And all of that's *before* finding out that his brother is dead and that his MOTHER replaced him with his worst enemy under mind control.

That there are so many fics that portray him as NOT traumatized is the amazing part. To some extent the show had to end when it did because the main characters were getting so chewed up that it was unrealistic that they'd be just fine - Sylar, Peter, Claire and Matt had the worst of it.

Oh, for sure, and I would even argue Noah's life was pretty fucked up too, although at least Claire loved him again and he got Lauren back, so I guess he's doing better.

I always come back to this scene in this one episode in early season 4 (whose name escapes me) where Hiro accidentally teleports to Peter before passing out. When he awakes in the hospital, Peter's waiting by his bedside, and Hiro says that maybe Destiny brought him to Peter to help him, and Peter's just so adamant (and unconvincing) that his life is fine and that he doesn't need fixing. Which, of course, it does need to be fixed since as someone (Noah?) pointed out, his apartment had no furniture and he was losing what few friends he had- like Hesam- because he was obsessed with saving people instead of living his own life.

ANYWAY.

Yeah, besides running into plot dead ends, they were totally just ruining those poor characters. And at least they left it with a wide open ending so we can all interpret it to our heart's desires.
