TV show review: Doctor Who, Aliens of London

Sep 10, 2011 12:13

I watched another Who episode, this one Aliens of London. This is New Who, Season 1, episode 4. This is everything that Painkiller Jane wasn't - it's gripping, interesting, and the characters are engaging and realistic. I can relate to them all - the laughing doctor; the bewildered, somewhat jilted boyfriend; the grateful but suspicious mother; and especially Rose. Rose is clearly the protagonist of the show. She's the one I'm identifying with and I love that I've found a show where the character I follow most is female. That's awesome.

I'll also point out things Painkiller Jane was missing: people looked different from one another; sets were different; dialogue was unique to the characters; characterization was great (and again, unique to the character); and the writing supported all this. Outfits were different, roles were different, bad guys weren't so clear cut, people had understandable motives and emotions that I could feel.

I was grating up laundry soap while watching and got so absorbed that I managed to grate some skin off my knuckles. Oh yeah, no way I'm going to waste my time with Painkiller Jane while I still have Who to watch.
