what a relief to hear that hong kong and macau came out well! (not that it made you homesick though ;;) i visited there a few years ago and both places were so fascinating, i hoped to be able to do them at least a little justice (since setting isn't always my strong point, too).
and yes the characterizations were definitely more based on the show, sunggyu especially, hehe. i remember in the first episode being surprised that he was secretly smart and then being surprised AGAIN that he was only doing it to help someone else!
