[This would have been posted earlier if I had not taken a detour to find the perfect Amelia Pond icon for this post. Kalie (
calikalie) of course had one.]
My writing for my Doctor Who AU fic has actually been going well, I am writing an scriptment of sorts that has reached seven pages. I'll be honest and tell you that that may be the most I've ever written in the same story. The difference in this AU is that Moffat didn't make all of the same bullshit moves that he did. Basically meaning that Rory is not a passive-agressive douchebag with no personality and Amy actually holds the Doctor accountable to the degree that she should have. Currently I am only working on rewriting Series 5 and including more information about Amy's backstory, thoughts, feelings, and the events of the two-year gap in "The Eleventh Hour". But I do have Series 6 planned out with a completely different plot that doens't do the characters any disservice and keeps continuity with Series 5.
I am especially proud of a certain piece of dialogue that came to me. It is a conversation Amy and Rory have at a cafe. In the AU's story, this takes place a few days after Amy moved back to Leadworth after attending uni in Norwich (which is only an hour and half away from Leadworth). Amy and Rory had bumped into each other at the grocery the day before and agreed to meet at the loacl cafe to catch up.
Amy is already sitting outside of the café because it is a nice day. She is reading the menu. Rory comes up wearing scrubs and sits down opposite her. Amy looks up.
[Smiling] “So you actually ended up a nurse.”
[Returns smile] “Of course, that’s what I said I’d do.”
Waiter Josh comes up, giving Amy a cup of tea. “Darjeeling black with lots of sugar and a hint of Earl Grey, just like you asked Amy.”
Amy puts down her menu.
“Thank you.” [Amy smiles in a way that is not outright flirtatious, but not simply of gratitude.]
“And I see your [slight inflection] date has arrived.” [Looks at Rory] “Hello Rory, and what will you have to drink?”
“Uhh, I’ll just have a coke Josh.”
“Alright, Rory. I’ll be back to take your orders shortly.”
Josh walks off.
[With unnecessary awkwardness] “So what did you end up studying in Norwich?”
[Obviously not wanting to talk about it.] “I studied aesthetics and psychoanalysis of modern media.”
[Eyes squinting] “So you watched telly and talked about how it made you feel?”
[Unhappy with his simplification of her degree.] “No, it was nothing like that, I wrote papers, lots of papers. And we listened to music too. And talked about colors.” [Leans in.] “We even did some case studies.”
[Unhappy with her making her degree sound legitimate] “Well I still think that you should’ve gone to Cambridge with me and studied something normal.”
“[Somewhat forcefully] No. You know that I didn’t want to go there. Hell, it’s only a half-hour away, everyone wanted to go there. Rory, why would I go there if I was only gonna see the same old people around all the time? Besides, you know I wanted to go see a real city.”
“Well Cambridge is a real city, and you know you did end up coming back.”
“I only wanted to be fair to my aunt, Rory. I’m not here ‘cause I want to be. She’s all alone in that big house now; I need to spend some time with her. […] You could’ve come to Norwich with me if you wanted.”
Josh comes back with Rory’s coke.
“Here you are. Now what are you two wanting?”
“I think I’m just going to order a slice of your apple tart.”
[Still looking at Amy] “A toasted ham sandwich with cheese, thank you.”
“Okay. [To Rory] Rye, wheat, …?”
[Looks at Josh now, jolted out of thought] “Ohh, uhh… Rye’s fine.”
Josh leaves. Amy and Rory go back to looking at each other. It is awkward mostly because of Rory. Amy looks down at her hands in her lap. She is chipping at her lilac thumb nail.
“So how long have you been back in Leadworth? I didn’t get to ask you when I bumped into you yesterday.”
“Oh I got back just a few days ago. Got finished unpacking Tuesday, said hi to Jeff Wednesday, ran into you at the grocery Thursday, and now I’m having lunch with you Friday.”
[Exasperated, agitated] “What happened Wednesday? You told Jeff you were back before me? Of course, typical… [broods].”
[Agitated at his ridiculousness] “It wasn’t like that. He lives just around the corner, so of course he knew I was back. He saw me drive down the street with my car full of boxes. We’ve always been friends, so of course he stopped by to say hi. [short beet] God Rory, why do you always have to do that?”
“Do what?”
“Be… difficult. I’ve never even gone out with Jeff. As I recall, I choose you over every bloke in the village, Jeff included. After year twelve, it was you who I was dating. All through sixth-from, it was you who I was dating. It’s not my fault and it’s not Jeff’s that things got weird between us after A-levels.1 And it’s not my fault that you didn’t come with me to Norwich. You could’ve gotten the same kind of degree there, but you insisted on going to Cambridge. And then that was the last of it. I’d compromised enough already, and I wasn’t going to give you that too. Your fucking inflexibility was the reason we broke up. You don’t compromise, and that’s why we didn’t work. Not me, not some random bloke I wanted to shag, […] you.”
“Amy…” [He goes for her hand on the table, and despite being angry, she lets him take it.] “I’m sorry.”
[Skeptically, frank] “Are you?”
To be honest, I am not exactly sure if this conveyed what I had wanted it to and I am not sure if I was able to properly write Amy and Rory. But I honeslty do like it because I feel like this is a conversation that a real life Amy and Rory would have had. Gahh, I just want some feedback.
