Tieless!

How much drivel a diary can preserve. Fifty years ago today as a high school sophomore, a few days after I had begun my diary, I forgot to wear a tie to school. Jackets and ties were required. De rigeur. Serious business. I didn't even notice when I left the house or when I arrived at school. A friend pointed it out to me in the nick of time. In the neck of time? I had time to scurry down from the third floor study hall to the first floor office of Brother Francis, the sub-director, who loaned me one for the day for the nominal fee of 10 cents. He had a drawerful of tacky semi-tattered cravats available to the forgetful adolescent boy. Salvation! In the entry I wrote to myself "It'll never happen again." I was such a timid Goody Twoshoes.
