JEESEZ, CHEESES!

Amsterdam cheese shop, 1998.
I've been going through a large number of old photos I've taken and posting them to my Flickr photostream. I encounter a lot of nostalgic memories coming face to face with my earlier years and gioventù perduta as I seek more interesting snapshots to post. Then there are also the images snapped during travels which make me reflect on some issue or other.

This above cheese-in-yo'-fuckin'-face-shop, for example, drives home to me the pathetic fact that although I love cheese, I am forbidden from eating much of it. Doctor's urging. Something to do with cholesterol. Arteries, aortas and hearts, it seems, generally don't like cheeses. How very asinine and tasteless of them!

Cheese is one of the world's oldest and noblest foods and can achieve a sublime greatness, especially when made by the French, Italians, and Dutch, as we see in the above photo. I could eat out that whole shop, literally, sexually. Among my favorites are Brie, Stilton, Gorgonzola, Edam, Gruyère. Oh well, two or three times a year I can indulge in a binge without real harm. Otherwise it's a tablespoon of grated Parmigiano on my ziti or some banal and boring old fat-free cottage cheese spiced up with chopped hot red peppers...and tears.
