My second mountain.

MY HUAYNA PICCHU

I've climbed two small mountains in my life. The first was a Marble Mountain in Vietnam, and I have already written about that here. The one pictured above was Huayna Picchu, overlooking the fabulous lost ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu in the visionary Peruvian Andes. I visited with my teaching colleague Bill Connors in 1997 and it made a dreamy impression.

My friend and I climbed this mountain, following the ruined Inca path, in about an hour. I huffed and puffed behind him but managed to lumber to the top drenched in the sweat of summer equatorial heat. Once arrived, you can gape down at Machu Picchu for a numbing view and you can ask yourself some questions. Like, does this place really exist? Am I dreaming? Imagining it? Am I like Werner Herzog's Aguirre, in pursuit of a mad dream? Might be.
