NEWPORT TOURIST TRAIN

Yesterday I took the Newport tourist train, riding one of two antique wooden cars of the Old Colony Line passenger service for a few miles along scenic Narragansett Bay, the Newport Naval Base, docked aircraft carriers. Passenger service on the line was disbanded in 1937 except for World War II troop transport to the Newport Naval Base. The train used to run between Newport, Fall River, and Boston. You could also get to Newport from Providence via Fall River at one time. Bostonians going to New York could take the train to Newport and an overnight ferry to New York. The line is now hermetically sealed, since the bridge between Aquidneck Island and Tiverton has been down for decades. Besides the tourist train there is a dinner train that uses the line.
