Now that's love.

I saw The Passion of the Christ today. I don't think I've ever cried in a movie so much before. I always knew what pain and suffering that Jesus went through for me, but I had never anticipated the extent of that pain and sufferring. It was horrible. I wanted to scream out, "Leave Him alone!" or "Stop doing that to Him!" but then I realized, that I was every bit as responsible for His blood pouring out as the Roman soldiers who were scourging Him were. And the thing is, all He had to do was take a needle and prick His finger; there would've been enough holiness and virtue in that one drop of blood to atone for the sin of all mankind. But that wasn't enough. God loved us so much and He chose to show us in this way. He chose to give his Son over to this suffering, just so we wouldn't have to bear it. And I kept thinking, "it should've been me," but at the same time I was so glad that it wasn't me. Because Jesus loves me that much. And the most humbling thing is that He didn't even blame any of those people for what they were doing to Him, because it was His own choice. They beat Him and He cried, "Father, forgive them!" Now that is real love.

And I want to write a poem to show my gratitude, but I know it will be inadequate. I'm gonna try anyway:

"Grace, Love, and Salvation."

A love so deep,
I could never understand
As I gaze at the holes
In His nail-scarred hands.
"Why, Jesus why?"
Is all I can say
"Why did You show me love
In such an unsual way?"

The tears start to flow,
Like a torrent of rain.
I wish there was a way
For Him to not bear my pain!
"But my child," He says
With a smile on His face
"I have chosen this path
To shower you with my grace."

A grace that is undeserved,
For a child gone so easily astray.
But he takes my face in His hands
And wipes all the tears away.
"My favor cannot be merited;
My love is freely given.
I have done all of this for you,
So you can be with Me in Heaven!"

Yeah... that so does not even begin to cover it. But it expresses a bit of how I feel.
