My (Great) Books List

Aug 21, 2007 17:19

It occurred to me that I haven't posted in a long time. I've been busy after returning from the month-long trip when we didn't have lots of time on the internet. Actually that trip was good for me, having discovered what an internet junkie I really am. Now I know I can survive without it, even as I've learned to do without TV and some other things. I do have more time now to do other things, but not enough! Never enough! Be that as it may, I just finished the last book in the Harry Potter saga (alas, it arrived at my doorstep at home a week after we left on the trip, and was waiting for me when I got home). What a wonderful ending to a great series of books. Huzzah to Joanne Kathleen (J.K.) Rowling (rhymes with "bowling"). You deserve every penny book and movie sales bring you.

It started me thinking about my "best" or "great" books list. I'll have a go at that here, knowing there will be edits as I think of those I've omitted, and these in no particular order:

Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card
The Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling
The Lord of the Rings series, J.R.R. Tolkien
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams
To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë
Catch-22, Joseph Heller
Little Women, Louisa May Alcott
The Dune series, Frank Herbert
Watership Down, Richard Adams
So many books and stories by Philip K. Dick, but The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldtrich particularly
Red Planet, Robert Heinlein
The Door into Summer, Robert Heinlein
Lots of other books by Robert Heinlein (and short stories, too)
R Is for Rocket, Ray Bradbury
Lots of other books by Ray Bradbury (and short stories, too)
The Amber Series by Roger Zelazny
Lord Jim, Joseph Conrad
Most early books by Stephen King, particularly It and The Stand
The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon
The Temeraire Series (starting with His Majesty's Dragon) by Naomi Novik
The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran
Passages, Gail Sheehy
The Four Agreements,
Books by Eric Hoffer

Books/Authors I haven't read (and probably should have) but want to:

His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman
One Hundred Years Of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez
Umberto Eco
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig

More to come.
