Oh my god, well I work for The Haworth Press now (www.haworthpress.com if you want to see if we have any books that might appeal to you) and we do TONS of gay and lesbian books. I'm working on one right now about gays in the workplace. Although it's about the workplace, there's a lot about domestic partner benefits, nonharassment policies, etc. which I think is all very interesting. It goes beyond just "well the Bible says being gay is wrong and marriage is between a man and woman, blah blah blah" becuase there are so many legal restrictions on nonheterosexual couples that aren't necessarily always addressed. This is a figure from the book, and the source is the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (2002): 42 percent of Americans believe the federal law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the United States, but there are no provisions for sexual orientation in the Constitution, Americans with Disabilities Act, Civil Rights Bills of 1964 and 1972, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, or the Age Discrimination Act.
Getting away or not focusing entirely on the moral issues and instead shifting to the civil rights issues could be interesting.
I don't know what your personal stance is and I'm not going to pretend like I'm an expert, but I might be able to point you to some good resources if you want to let me know what you decide on as your approach. Lord knows I read enough of these books and they all have lenghty reference setions, so just let me know if I can help!
And who is your professor for Persuasive Argument? Just curious--I was a writing major way back when (a whole year ago!).
