(Sorry for the long entry, I promise they won't all be like this.)
I am a white belt in Tai Kwon Do, and I have always felt intimidated by all the higher belts. The only order I know of right now is white - orange - yellow, but in my class there isn't even so much as a yellow belt! I felt overwhelmed by that! I prayed and I prayed for a lower level belt to come and save the day, and I got exactly what I DIDN'T want. In my class today I walked in right on time, which also meant that class would start in two or three minutes, everything is like that now. XP
So I take off my sandals put down my boxing gloves and water bottle, and I look up and there's another white belt! :D 'Huzzah!' I think to myself, 'I won't have to spar with a friggin' BLACK belt!' (note: The black belts that come into my class aren't really class members they're more like helpers who hold pads and get beat up for our learning experience. XP) So we get to the sparring part of the lesson and she is trying to TEACH me how to do things, I accept the smaller things, like, 'You shouldn't hold that [pad] so lightly, hold it tougher so you don't end up falling back or something.'
That's fine, I was just being lazy and needed a wake up call, But then she starts trying to get a conversation going while we're doing our kicks. And apparently it's impossible to get a conversation going WHILE KICKING. So I finally tell her she should probably kick and talk at the same time. She looks at me like I've just told her I have a giant oozing rash on my arse, and shuts up. I'll tell you I wasn't at all pleased with the look but I was definitely pleased with the shutting up part. At the end of class I had finally gotten a nice conversation going with her about careers.
I had told her that the reason I was in Tai Kwon Do was because I wanted to be a stunt person, she said something along the lines of, 'Oh no! I could never do that!' That was perfectly acceptable as most people only see the dangerous side of stunting and not the totally awesome falling off a building and NOT dieing part of it. XP But soon after that she said, 'I would want to be either a Lawyer or a Fashion Designer, you know something fun.' and as an after thought, 'Oh and makes a lot of money too.'
I don't know about you, but I'm not about to make friends with someone who thinks being a LAWYER would be fun. Also the added insult was the fact that she was pretty much saying Martial Arts sucked, a lot of you are going to say I'm taking what she said a little bit seriously, but you didn't hear the way she SAID it. The last knife in the chest thing that happened was when we were leaving class she asked me whether I was coming back the next day, (she had warmed back up to me by then, since I had apologized for [I guess] sounding rude when I had told her to talk WHILE kicking.) I said that I wasn't, that I only went on Mondays and Wednesdays, she looked at me and said, 'You come only two days? I thought you said you were planning on doing this as a career.' Well up yours Shannon.
As I was leaving the building with my mom who takes Cardio Kickboxing the same time I'm in class she said, 'So I see you finally have another white belt in class with you, how'd that go?' I let out a short laugh, wiped a bit of sweat from my forehead and said 'Bring on the Black Belts!'
