Who: Atobe Keigo, Oshitari Yuushi
Where: The courts, then HS dorms
When: August 2nd
Rating: PG
Summary: Oshitari apologizes and attempts to convince Atobe to calm down.

Oshitari left the common area. Grabbing an umbrella on the way out, he headed towards the tennis courts, knowing that's where Atobe would be despite the light rain that had plagued the island since round two of the tournament. Opening the accessory above him, he walked with a slight increase in speed. He really didn't want his best friend to get electrocuted. Once he arrived at the court, he waited until Atobe got frustrated with his serve not going in before stepping onto it.

"You know you have incredibly poor control when it's wet," Oshitari said, attempting to thaw the ice between them.

Scowling at his racket Atobe stubbornly kept his back turned to his friend. "Only more reason to work on it," he snapped curtly, pulling a spare ball out of pocket and shifting into position for yet another serve.

"Hmm, normally you won't be asked to play in the rain," Oshitari said. He sloshed quietly over to the bench and watched as Atobe served another out ball. He rested the umbrella against his shoulder. Oshitari didn't know where to begin, but based on Atobe's stiffness, he'd have to tread carefully. "About earlier... my sincerest apologies. I shouldn't have pressed."

"Don't try to pacify me." Atobe huffed after a few more misplaced serves, finally turning to face the other teen. Considering how often he had sneezed earlier he was somewhat concerned he might be catching a cold, something not improved by continued practice in the steady drizzle. "You have barely been in a relationship for five minutes and already you think everybody else should be too."

Oshitari opened his mouth then closed it. He wasn't trying to pacify Atobe or insist everyone be in a relationship. He honestly was just happy that despite the unfortunate circumstances, people were finding love (or a mere distraction.) "Is it that wrong of me to wish for a small ray of sunshine in these stormy climes?" he asked, reaching down and opening Atobe's tennis bag. "I'm not exactly keen on playing the oh-woe-is-me-I've-been-kidnapped-whatever-shall-I-do trope."

Passing his racket to Yuushi, Atobe pulled his towel out to dry off his face and give his hair a quick once over as well. "You are free to do as you please Yuushi," he pointed out. "I believe I have not said a word against your arrangement with Yagyuu." Satisfied for the moment he draped the damp towel around his neck. "And I wouldn't be breathing a word against Ootori and Shishido if they had an ounce of discretion. However I am allowed my own opinion on relationships formed under circumstances such as these and that I would prefer not to burden myself in this manner." He gave Yuushi a look, half challenge and half sulk.

"I'm well aware that I can do as I please, Keigo," Oshitari started, then he smiled. "It's hard to have discretion when they've been dancing around their attraction for so long." He put in the racket and closed up Atobe's bag, picking it up to carry. He stepped closer to Atobe and held the umbrella over the both of them. Kabaji would never forgive him if Atobe got sick. "Of course you're allowed your own opinions. I'd never deny you that... I know this experience has thrown you off, but wouldn't it be better for you mentally to allow yourself some enjoyment? I don't enjoy seeing you like this. I feel rather helpless in how to assist."

"I'm playing tennis," Atobe defended, shoulders hunching in ever so slightly before moved closer to Yuushi so they could share the umbrella easier. "I don't particularly romance and that isn't going to change stranded here."

"Tennis can't fix everything," Oshitari said quietly. In fact, he'd venture it had broken quite a many things and was one of the main reasons they were here in the first place. He wondered if they'd be sent home if they just stopped playing. "It could change if you'd will it. Do you want to wallow in being upset? If you do, I'll cease all romantic talk around you."

"I am not wallowing," Atobe corrected him with a disdainful wrinkle of his nose. "And what is wrong with enjoying tennis?"

"Fine, you're not wallowing, but you can't deny you haven't been yourself lately," Oshitari countered. With or without romance or a romantic interest, he'd be worried about Atobe. He let out a breath. "There's nothing wrong with it."

"Yuushi..." Atobe sighed. "Maybe I have been a little more high strung than usual. But I can't help being concerned about all of this. I know it's not productive but it's there no matter what I do. And I don't want to get used to being here - I have a bad feeling that something bad will happen as soon as I let down my guard." Glancing over at his friend he allowed a little quirk of his lips. "But I am happy for you - and even for Shishido and Ootori."

More than usual was an understatement. Oshitari wondered for a moment if Atobe realized that. "I'd suggest we're all concerned, but some more outwardly so than others," he said, offering a slight smile to Atobe. "Playing matchmaker and complaining about books has provided me a means to not think so often on what I did to be whisked away in my sleep." It was a touch dramatic, but... "I don't believe I've let my guard down. I've been listening and keeping my eyes open. My relationship with Yagyuu and Shishido's with Ootori isn't going to cause us to forget our present circumstances. It also doesn't prevent me from being at your service when needed or wanted."

"We'll see about that," Atobe quipped then shook his head. "But I suppose I will try to be less short tempered with everybody." It was the least he could do to ease his dear friend's worry.

"I'm sure Kabaji will be able to sleep a bit easier as well if he sees you calmer." Oshitari adjusted the strap on his shoulder. "By the way, thank you for suggesting asking Yagyuu to dinner. It was absolutely wonderful."

"Of course it was." Atobe preened ever so slightly. "And I have spoken with Kabaji - he had been taking the defeats at the tournament and the practice matches a bit too much to heart."

Oshitari knew that would cheer him up a bit. "Nonetheless, I appreciated your advice." He hummed. "I had said the same thing, in a roundabout way, but I suppose he truly needed to hear it from you before he would find some relief." Kabaji was sweet, but could be sensitive to a fault.

"He did." Atobe smiled fondly at the memory of his talk with his friend before frowning again. "I still don't think that Echizen would be a good match for him." And nothing anybody could say would change that.

"Now you're going to say that no one is good enough for Kabaji," Oshitari said with a smirk. Though, really, he couldn't fault Atobe for that; Kabaji was, quite honestly, one of the nicest people he'd ever met.

"Nobody I have met so far." Atobe agreed. "I honestly can't understand what got into Echizen - I thought he was looking for somebody dominant." And as much as he loved Kabaji he was perfectly aware that under all those muscles beat a very tender heart.

Oshitari shrugged. He didn't know what was going on with Echizen either. Honestly, he thought the teen had nothing but tennis on the mind, but there were surprises lurking around every corner it seemed. "Perhaps he's looking for a replacement for his cat," Oshitari offered as they arrived back at the dorms.

"Or he has gone crazy." Pushing the door open Atobe waited until Yuushi had closed the umbrella and joined him before letting it fall shut again. "Maybe we should talk with Kabaji about it...."

Also a valid argument. Oshitari shook out the water from the umbrella then wrapped it up and put it with the others. "Hmm, I don't know. I wouldn't wish him to become upset. Maybe slowly introduce the idea. It might also be a good to gauge where his interests lie."

"I'll leave that to you then." Atobe decided as the door fell shut behind them. Personally he would have just told Kabaji to be careful around the first year but Yuushi had the more subtle approach for this. "Just don't make him think he has to do it." Or that it would be a good idea to.

Why me? Oshitari wanted to ask. He nodded though. He definitely had more tact when it came to coaxing information out from others. "Of course not, buchou," he said, his voice slightly mocking. "Leave it to me."

"Good, good." Atobe nodded, blithely ignoring Yuushi's sarcasm. "I will keep a close eye on Echizen in the meantime." Seeing as they were sharing a room it shouldn't be difficult at all. "Maybe he will have changed his mind again when he wakes up."

"Please do. I'd like to talk to Kabaji-kun before he becomes impure due to loose lips," Oshitari said. He didn't know how long he'd need, but hopefully Atobe could keep him busy.

"I'd prefer for that to never happen," Atobe sniffed delicately, making a face before sneezing violently. "I think I'll take a hot shower before bed." He sighed, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket to dab at his nose. "Just drop off my bag in my room if you could."

Oshitari frowned for a moment, then nodded. "If you do come down with something, I'd appreciate it if you told Kabaji it wasn't my fault," he said, turning towards Atobe's room. "Have a good shower, Keigo."

"Your care for my well being warms my heart," Atobe snarked but nodded. "I will see you tomorrow at the tournament Yuushi."

"Yes buchou," Oshitari replied, before padding away and leaving Atobe to the low water pressure in the showers.
