Reading

My LJ's very blank. Since my mind seems to be equally vacant at the moment, I stole a Meme-ish thing to fill some space.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Strike out the books you have no intention of ever reading, or were forced to read at school and hated.
5) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've only read 6 and force books upon them.

1. Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen (Had to read part of it- ARGH)
The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien (Read 1.5 books... Ugh.)
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte (I've heard mixed reviews of this)
The Harry Potter Series - JK Rowling
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
The Bible (All the old testament in Hebrew AND English, and I can quote from it... Bereshet bara Elohim, et ha shamayim ve et ha aretz.... The NT I've seen a bit of, mostly on various obnoxious pamphlets.)
Wuthering Heights
Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell (Love.)
His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman (Not quite a favorite, but I loved the first 2 in the series. The last one? I'm okay with dissing religion, but it was sudden and the plot was CRAP)
Great Expectations- Charles Dickens (And I'll admit it, I LIKED this. Poor pip. Estella was amazing.)
Little Women - Louisa M Alcott
Tess of the D'Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy (Never heard of this)
Catch 22 - Joseph Heller (My kind of book- funny and absurd.)
Complete Works of Shakespeare (A few plays were good but I feel NO need to read 'em all.)
Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier
The Hobbit - JRR Tolkien
Birdsong - Sebastian Faulks
Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger (I have never wanted to smack a character as much as Holden. And the kids in my class kept going on about how the guy who patted him on the head was probably a child molester.)
The Time Traveller's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
Middlemarch - George Eliot
Gone With The Wind - Margaret Mitchell (Love. Love. But I hated Rhett towards the end- he was kinda badass, why did he screw it up by being a dick? ._.; Scarlett was amazing, too, up until he dragged her off up the stairs with her crying.. And then she decided she liked it. =\ Maybe if I hadn't been 10 when I read this for the first time I'd have been less creeped out.)
The Great Gatsby - F Scott Fitzgerald (Meh, too much symbolism for me. Not my favorite.)
Bleak House - Charles Dickens (I know- no one REALLY likes Dickens, they just claim to. A tale of two cities was awful and I never finished it, but I quite liked Great Expectations. Then again, when I watched the 9 hour play of NIcholas Nickleby it was awful, and the book appeared worse... And then there's Oliver Twist, which I had to read too much of in private school, and despised. So I suppose his works are really a mixed bag. )
War and Peace - Leo Tolstoy (NOOOOooooo)
The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams (It's way overrated.)
Brideshead Revisited - Evelyn Waugh
Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoyevsky (Liked it at first, but it dragged too much and then the end was too sudden.)
Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck
Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll
The Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Grahame (Classic kid's story!)
Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy
David Copperfield - Charles Dickens
Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis (Christian propoganda? Maybe. But I still liked 'em.)
Emma - Jane Austen
Persuasion - Jane Austen
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe - CS Lewis
The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini (What is it with hated/unhappy kids and kites? I read a book about two chinese brothers who loved kites recently, and now this...)
Captain Corelli's Mandolin - Louis De Bernieres
Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden
Winnie the Pooh - AA Milne
Animal Farm - George Orwell
The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown (TRIED to read this... Controversy's fun, but this book managed to make it lame and boring.)
One Hundred Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez
A Prayer for Owen Meaney - John Irving
The Woman in White - Wilkie Collins
Anne of Green Gables - LM Montgomery (These were good when I started the series, but once I hit about 10, started being lame.)
Far From The Madding Crowd - Thomas Hardy
The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood
Lord of the Flies - William Golding
Atonement - Ian McEwan

Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov
The Secret History - Donna Tartt
The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold
Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas
On The Road - Jack Kerouac (Desolation angels and Dharma bums especially were better.)
Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy
Bridget Jones's Diary - Helen Fielding
Midnight's Children - Salman Rushdie
Moby Dick - Herman Melville
Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens (Had to 'analyze' Fagin and other characters for school.... Bleh. Never liked this. Though I suppose it was less painful to read then The Prioress' tale!)
Dracula - Bram Stoker (The book that started the vampire craze/fetish... What the hell, it's classic, I ought to read it someday.)
The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett (The movie was adorable! I never did finish the whole book.)
Notes From A Small Island - Bill Bryson
Ulysses - James Joyce
The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath
Swallows and Amazons - Arthur Ransome
Germinal - Emile Zola
Vanity Fair - William Makepeace Thackeray
Possession - AS Byatt
A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens (Wasn't bad, but I didn't really get it, possibly because I suck at understanding christianity.)
Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell
The Color Purple - Alice Walker (The writing wasn't so great, IMHO. If you're looking for a book about abused minority women, go with I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. Or look for something cheerier and spare yourself.)
The Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro
Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert
A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry
Charlotte's Web - EB White

A Town Like Alice - Nevil Shute
The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas
Hamlet - William Shakespeare
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Roald Dahl
Les Miserables - Victor Hugo (Might as well read this, to see what all the fuss is about.)
