“-chan? Tat-chan!? TAT-CHAN?” Ueda Tatsuya clapped a hand over his left ear as the headphones were pulled off his head, snagging on his earring.

“Oi!” He turned to find Akanishi Jin standing over him with the headphones dangling from his fingertips.

“You shouldn’t listen to the music so loud; you’ll ruin your hearing. What is this? The demo for the new single?” Jin asked placing one of the earphones over his ear and bobbing his head a few times. “Good beat.”

“What is it?” Ueda sighed, rubbing his ear to relieve the tingling.

“We’re leaving for the day.” Jin answered lowering the headphones and jerking his thumb to indicate Taguchi and Nakamaru behind him. “Are you sure you don’t want to come out to dinner with us?”

“You should come, Uepi.” Taguchi said, shrugging his bag onto his shoulder. Ueda smiled at him before turning back to Jin.

“Sorry, I can’t. I’ve got to finish the promotional study for the new single by tonight. Mori-san expects it in the morning.”

“Okay, but next time you should come to dinner with us. You need to relax a bit and don’t go to the gym tonight, go home and rest. We’ve got the practices for the countdown tomorrow.” Nakamaru said, ushering his two band mates out of the room.

“Sure, we’ll go out later or something. I promise I’ll get some rest Yuu-chan. Have fun.” Ueda waved and the three were gone, leaving him completely alone in the room. As soon as the door was closed, he sighed and turned back to the sheets of music spread across the table in front of him.

“Baa~ Jin ruined my concentration.” He slipped the headphones back over his ears and pressed the back button on his player, causing the song to restart. Before too long he was buried back in the music, making notes on the music to bring up later at his meeting with his manager and completely oblivious to the rest of the world as he worked.

The song had played through twice when Ueda had finally hit the stop button on the player and removed the headphones. He yawned and dropped his pen on top of the written over music sheets before stretching his arms up and curling his fingers around each other.

“Oh, it’s you.” Ueda started slightly at the voice, whipping around to find Kame standing in the doorway with his duffel bag hung over his shoulder.

“Eh…?” Kame stepped into the room with a weary smile.

“I left my script here and was coming back to get it when I saw the light on. I thought Akanishi or Taguchi might have left the light on again.”

“Oh, yeah, I had to finish the new single’s demo. Mori-san wants my review in the morning. Isn’t it a bit late for you?” Ueda replied indicating the music sheets and player.

“Really!? It’s finished? The demo’s out? Cool!” Kame picked up the sheet music and read through it. “LIPS?” Ueda shrugged but before he could verbally respond, Kame placed the music down again.

“It isn’t that late. It’s only…12:10. I usually don’t go to sleep until around three anyways.” Kame explained, with a wave at the clock. Ueda started gathering all the papers on the desk together. He paused to look over a schedule that had been hiding under the corner of a costume sketch.

“You need more sleep, Kame. We’re doing countdown tomorrow by the way.” He continued sliding all the papers into the heavy manila envelope as Kame rocked on his heels.

“Yeah, Koki was telling me about it earlier. And don’t nag me, I hear enough from Koki and Maru to last me a lifetime. Also, I’m hungry. Let’s go out to eat.” Ueda laughed and shouldered his bag before tucking the envelope and his notebook under his arm.

“Sure.” They left the room, latching the door behind them, and made their way down the hall to the lift.

“How’s training going?” Ueda started. Kame glanced at him briefly.

“It’s tough, I don’t know how you keep up with it. I think I’m finally getting some muscles though.” Kame said flexing his arm to prove his point.

“You’ve improved definitely. I noticed that the other day when we went to the gym together. Speaking of which, we need to go together again sometime.” Ueda drawled, casting Kame’s arm a casual glance. Kame sighed and lowered his arm, smoothing the winkles of his sleeve.

“But I’m still no where near your level.” Ueda was slightly surprised by this.

“My level? I’m not that good, I still have a whole lot to learn. Besides, you don’t have to be at my level, it’s for the drama isn’t it?” Kame grinned at the older male’s modesty.

“I don’t understand why you didn’t accept the role when it was offered to you. I mean, you would have been perfect as the lead.” By this time they reached the lift and Ueda pressed the down button before answering.

“I’m a boxer and a songwriter. I don’t act. I leave that to you and the rest of the group. Besides, the lead over eats and I would get sick from that.”

“You eat twice as much as the rest of us do, not including Akanishi, and you think you can’t handle a role like that. Ueda, it makes me sick just watching you eat as much as you do.”

“At least it’s all healthy.” Ueda laughed. The lift’s doors opened with a ping and the two stepped inside.

“I hope this drama does well.”

“Aww…you’ll be great. Give it your best.”

“I’ll try.” Kame pressed the button for ground level. “Hey, do you have the schedule for the new single’s release in there?”

“Yeah, hold on.” Ueda held up the envelope and pulled the papers halfway out to thumb through them. “Here it is.” He removed one of the sheets and handed it to Kame.

“Expected single release date January 28th…That soon? The drama starts airing on the 12th?”

“Yeah I was going to ask Mori-san about that. I guess they’re trying to fit into some schedule for this month.” Kame handed the schedule back and Ueda tucked it into the envelope under his arm. He blindly shoved both the envelope and notebook into his half-opened bag.

“They should have done that with Keep the Faith.” Ueda shrugged, turning to the lift doors as the lift came to a stop. They stepped out together and headed for the doors of the jimusho after a goodbye from the security guard.

“Where do you want to go eat?” Kame asked.

“Anywhere’s fine, just no American. Jin’s almost killed my taste for it.”

“I agree, I’m getting tired of those greasy burgers that Akanishi seems to adore” Kame pulled a face causing Ueda to laugh, as they walked down the street chatting together.

*Caesura*

Ryo sighed, running a hand through his hair as he shut and locked the door to NEWS’s practice room. He fought the yawn that threatened to break loose and turned to glance down the darkened, empty hallways. Damn his late nights. He sighed again and started down NEWS’s hall to the elevator, occasionally passing under the emergency lights that lit up only a section of the hallway.

“Ahh~I just want to go to bed. Don’t give me that.” Ryo groaned as his stomach gave a low rumble. Maybe he should have taken Koyama’s offer to pick him up some dinner but no, he was stubborn to get the dance steps perfect. Time enough to eat later.

Ryo turned as he heard something fall behind him or thought he did. There wasn’t anything down the hall that he could see, considering he could only see the patches of hallway that was lit up, everything else was in darkness. Ryo stared for several moments until he shook his head and continued down the hallway, grinning at his own silliness.

The grin fell almost immediately. He could almost swear there were footsteps echoing behind him, Ryo gulped and started to turn around when something grabbed him from behind.

“Ryo-chan~.” Ryo almost screamed swinging around, his back met the wall and his heart was racing. His eyes slowly dilated from the pinpricks of fear that they had become to see just who had grabbed him.

“What the hell, Yamashita!?” Yamapi was almost rolling on the floor laughing.

“HAHA! God! You were so scared! That was priceless.”

“Yamapi, you moronic as…” Ryo’s strings of curses were cut off by Yamapi wrapping a hand over his mouth.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I couldn’t resist, okay? I won’t do it again.” The NEWS leader managed to say before exploding into laughter once again.

“Damn straight you better not do it again or I’ll make sure you’ll need plastic surgery to fix the damage to your manhood!” Yamapi stopped laughing. “What the hell are you doing here? You weren’t even scheduled to be here today? It’s past midnight!”

“I was talking to Keii-chan on the phone about two hours ago. He said you were staying over late tonight, so I was coming to keep you company but you were finished and cleaning up when I got here. We just finished the photoshoot for the new magazine spread.” Yamapi explained his laughter still visible around the corners of his lips. Ryo stared at him in silence before he shook his head violently and turned around to walk away/

“Ugh! I’m going home, so go find someone else to mess with. Or better yet, go home.” Ryo said but was stopped by his stomach giving a loud growl. Yamapi caught up with him, still grinning.

“Aww~ I was going to invite you out to eat with me.”

“No, I want to go to bed. We’ve got countdown practices tomorrow and that new song, what was it… Hatsu Uta… to learn? Or did you get so caught up in your photo-shoot that you forgot?”

“I didn’t forget.” Yamapi frowned. “You’re mean tonight, Ryo-chan. Santa doesn’t bring gifts to mean boys and girls.”

“Christmas was yesterday, you idiot. And we’re too old for stuff like that. Stop hanging out with Jin! And I’m not going to eat with you…I’m going home.”

“But I’m hungry and I know for a fact that you are hungry too. Plus it’s not good to go without eating…so you’re coming rather you like it or not.” Yamapi grabbed Ryo’s arm and almost dragged him down the hall to the lift. Ryo protested loudly, it was a good thing that most of the jimusho was closed down for the night and hardly anyone was there.

“Stop! STOP! Yamashita!” Ryo finally managed to free his arm from Yamapi’s death hold. Yamapi made to grab him again but missed, falling flat as Ryo moved. “Alright, I’ll go out to eat with you…”

Yamapi grinned. “…But you’re paying.”

“What!? No fair, Ryo-chan!” Yamapi watched as Ryo continued walking down the hallway and pressed the button to call the lift. Yamapi ran up to him and muttered something that sounded like ‘short idiots getting away with everything’ under his breath. Ryo stepped into the lift as it opened, smirking good-naturally. He was contemplating letting Yamapi slide for the short idiot comment or not when he noticed a manila envelope lying on the floor of the lift. It had one or two papers hanging out of the flap. He couldn’t tell what they were anymore than a jumble of words and numbers.

He moved over to pick the envelope up and glanced over the first page that was hanging out. It was a schedule for KAT-TUN’s new single release and performances. KAT-TUN’s manager must have dropped it earlier. Ryo shrugged and decided that he’ll just give it to Jin in the morning so he could return it. Ryo slid the papers back into the envelope and closed the flap. He turned it over to slip it into his duffel bag and stopped almost immediately.

The envelope had the name ‘Ueda Tatsuya’ on the front of it. The envelope belonged to Ueda? Now that Ryo thought about it, he could remember Jin saying something about Ueda being the one that usually organized their concerts and promotions. Ryo came back to his senses when he realized that Yamapi was waiting for a response.

“I’m sorry, what?” Ryo shoved the envelope into his bag in a hurry, so the other wouldn’t see what he had been, unconsciously, staring at for the last few seconds.

“Where do you want to eat? I know of a great little Chinese restaurant with some of the best Dim Sum…” Yamapi started but Ryo cut him off.

“That’s fine, let’s go there.” Yamapi nodded happily and led the way out of the lift that Ryo had just noticed had stopped. Ryo cast a glance down at his bag and almost through it to the envelope inside. He’ll return it to Ueda tomorrow.
