Fàilte!
This is my first post here, so let me begin by saying I am very happy to have found this community and hope I won’t irritate everyone with my endless questions about Scottish Gaelic (attribute it to an obsessive desire to get things right).
I’ve wanted to learn Scottish Gaelic for years, but have always been too lazy or busy or cowardly to dive into it. I want to learn mostly because I have a lot of Scottish ancestry, I love the sound of the language, I want to help keep it alive, and I’ve been working on a novel in which some of the characters speak Scottish Gaelic fluently from childhood, so I figure I should learn it at least a little.
I have a “teach yourself” book (
http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/0071418849) that I have referenced a few times (mostly for letter pronunciation) and listened to the CD a little, along with searching for single words in MacBain's and MacFarlane's Scottish Gaelic dictionaries, which I got online (
http://www.ceantar.org/Dicts/search.html). Tell me if there is a better online dictionary I should be using. Oh, and I listen to and try to sing along with Enya and Capercaillie a lot, if that’s anything pronunciation-wise.
So, basically, what I’m saying is I really don’t know anything save a few words that I recognize in text but don’t trust myself to pronounce properly. And I think I’ve finally memorized that “mh” and “bh” are pronounced like English “v” ;)
I’m posting now because I recently got a new puppy and wanted to name her Luath; both because it means “swift” and it was the name of a Gaelic/Irish hero’s favorite dog. I’m Anglicizing it as Luah (because, as far as I can tell from looking at Scottish Gaelic pronunciation, that’s what it’s supposed to sound like) so that people who don’t speak Gaelic can have a chance of pronouncing it properly. I’ve been saying Luah, lu like Lucy, and ah like what/what. Can someone tell me if I’m saying it right or not (before the puppy starts responding to her name)?
Also, to force myself to learn Scottish Gaelic, I’ve decided to teach my new puppy in Gaelic (a caveat; expect more questions about commands in the future). I figure that way I will have to use Gaelic words daily, and I’ll start getting a hang of it, at least a little.
Lastly, I don’t know if anyone here is a member of
pronunciation, but I was wondering if someone could supply me with a wav/MP3 file or something with someone who speaks Scottish Gaelic saying “luath” so that I can feel comfortable in saying it right; I do a lot better when I’ve actually heard the word spoken. I would be very grateful for any such help :)
