2009, here I come

Jan 09, 2009 11:50

I've spent much of the morning, aside from a few brief interludes to get Jonah off to school and speak with the insurance adjuster on getting someone out to look at the roof with our contractor and talking with a dolt at GoDaddy (will explain more in a moment on the latter) getting a banner graphic uploaded to my Etsy store (not great, but at least one is there) and filling in some necessary information about my store. I figure it's best to do all of this before I list my first item, or even spend time working on items, since it needs to be there should anything sell. I'm not expecting immediate sales of course, but it would just be nice to just make up a bunch of items and get them listed rather than going through all of this later. It won't be a distraction while I'm at the bench now.

As far as the dolt at GoDaddy, I'm extremely annoyed by how I've been inundated in the past two days with phone calls and emails trying to sell me more services than I signed up for originally. Yes, I did the absolute bare minimum to get the three domains I wanted (gaiasjewel.com, .net and .org) in the hopes of keeping my business start up costs at a minimum. I probably wouldn't be as annoyed if I had been told up front that this call I received this morning was a sales call. But no, it was disguised as a "confirming information on my recent order" call. No, really he was just going through each step of my purchase, noting where I didn't buy their extras and trying to talk me into getting them. When I finally said, no, don't change a thing, I know what I ordered and I ordered what I wanted, he ended the call rather abruptly.

I just don't appreciate the deception in trying to make me think it was anything but a telemarketing call. I had not been planning on using them for hosting anyway, but now I'm considering looking elsewhere for any other domain/website needs of mine in the future.

More on the banner graphic, I'm still trying to get the hang of GIMP. I used to be really good at PhotoShop and GIMP is basically a free, not as powerful version of it, but I'm just so out of practice. I no longer know what anything does or how to get it to do what I want. I even messed around with it a few months ago and got pretty good. But in the new version, there are new things and things that work differently and such. I felt like an idiot when I first opened it and couldn't even figure out where to change my font size. I'll get the hang of it though. As for now, the graphic looks ok and I know others will be better. I'll just have to keep working with GIMP to stay in practice.

I feel good so far. Things are underway. I just need to keep plugging along. I need to get all this web stuff out of the way so I can get to work on some jewelry too. I've got more crimp beads and crimp covers on the way so I won't feel limited by my materials when I sit down at my work space again. I need to consider participating in the next bulk wire buy on the WWJSilversmithing group, too.
