I'm gonna skin some kittens....

Sep 14, 2009 18:19

They are refusing to use the litter box and are pooping all over my floor. First it was the living room, and now they have moved over to pooping in my bedroom too. *grumbles*

Mamacat and kittens are locked away in the bathroom until I can get some stuff to try and litter box train the babes.

Any suggestions? I'm really sick of picking up poop.

Move the box to wherever they live and the next time one poops on the floor, put the kitten and the poop in the box. You'll also need to get some of the enzymatic cleaner to make sure you get up the smell off the floor. Don't forget to look for urine spots (it'll show up under a black light, btw) and clean those with the same thing. They'll go where it smells like someone's gone before.

Have tried that, they then poop around the box or find a new spot to poop in. I have tried everything I can think of. Have locked them away in bathroom with a clean litter box and ammonia, have cleaned the areas with white vinager and a vet bought carpet cleaner, have put them several times in the litter box with their poop and simulated scratching, but nothing seems to be taking. I'm at wits end with this lot and want them out of my house.

Vinegar won't do any good. What are you using the ammonia for? What kind of litter are you using? Maybe they don't like it. You know that wonderful "green" litter? I've never had a cat who would use it. They want Tidy Cat. Nothing else will do. I've had some who'd, grudgingly, use the flushable litter, but they don't *like* it. Others would show their disdain by going right next to the box.

See if you can find a cleaner called PetZyme. I think Pets' Mart carries it.

The vinegar and ammonia was from the suggestion of amazonx who heard it on a radio show. The vinegar is suppose to smell bad to them so they avoid that area, and the ammonia in the litter is suppose to help promote them to use that area. Right now, I have two different kinds of litter, clumping and non-clumping. They were using the non-clumping litter for a little bit, but have gone back to pooping on my carpets.

Petsmart is in Joplin which is at least a 30-40 min drive from here, and I don't have much time to make it over there.

Bummer. The problem with the ammonia is if it's too strong, they'll avoid it. I used to have multiple boxes and I'd always have one that had been emptied, scrubbed (with whatever soap I had around) and then allowed to bake in the sun for a few days. Then, I'd rotate it back inside and take the next one out to bake.

This might be annoying to you for a while, but try sprinkling cayenne pepper on the carpeted areas they've soiled. That should drive them away from it.

Then there's the whole watching them like a hawk and picking them up and moving them into the box as soon as they start hunting for a spot. Stroke them and pet them and generally make being in the box a nice thing. Eventually they should get the idea.

I only used about a teaspoon amount of ammonia, and it was at the bottom of the litter. It worked for a day, then they started pooping on the floors again when I went to work.

I'll try the cayenne pepper.

But right now, all I want is sleep. Have to be up in 4.5 hours for work *sighs* and the cats are keeping me up.
