I've been checking out SGA/SG1 xovers as of late. These are the finds:
Babette's Plague by
kellifer_k This fic is actually Jack/Daniel (a pairing I've written but never particularly seen), but the underlying story deals with SG1 traveling to Atlantis to find Sheppard to be the last one there.
As in most fics (or tv shows other than House) that deal with medicine and biology, I think that the use of disease is a bit pedestrian, but I liked the pacing of the fic, the suspense, the emotions sort of dancing on the side of things without becoming particularly overwhelming.
I also liked the sort of sullen way that Sheppard behaves here - he's adamant but also defeated, which I think really speaks to what I see in him - capable of maintaining optimism for the sake of others, but not really for the sake of himself (hence the resigned state we find him in at the beginning of the show, the way he gives up on hope of rescue in epiphany, even when around his team he's doing the 'it's not over until it's over' thing).
Also, I like how this fic highlights the differences between O'Neill and Sheppard - they're both sarcastic and righteous, but in the end O'Neill is sarcastic because he's jaded and Sheppard is sarcastic because he's putting up a front. Also, Sheppard will always be more reckless than O'Neill (as showcased here).
Five Battles Teal'c of Chulack Never Fought by cofax
Another SG1 fic. I love all of these - they are creepy and different and really show the world through Teal'c eyes. Pretty much totally awesome, except the whole Teal'c/O'Neill bit, because um . . . I just understand the pairing.
The Towers on the Heights Reach to Hev'n's Own Blue by
minervacat I was up late reading this story, which is really testament to good writing because it can't really be said to be a story with a lot of tension in it. Nobody is in danger of dying or falling into very very hotmansex or anything of that nature. It's a story about everyday things, which sometimes really work but most of the times really, really don't.
I don't know a lot about the sports discussed. I love baseball, volleyball, and skiing, but here there's a lot of intimate details of football, basketball and soccer, my sum total knowledge of which goes something like this: USC good, Lakers good, France lost, mwahahahahaha!
So, to write a story about sports and have me both understand and like it is pretty amazing thing. I liked the mitchell and sheppard doing the guy thing. I liked the feeling of manic energy that people who are obsessed with things that really have very little to do with their lives can get (erm . . . fandom . . . *coughs*) and the fact that I felt as though the story finished and had a satisfying ending even though I'm not entirely sure what it was.
