I don't spend the whole day in front of the computer. I leave it on most of the day for my iTunes since I try to prolong the life of my iPod. Lately though, I've been increasing the hours I'm connected on the internet and I just wanna talk about some Internet phenomenons.
1. Facebook
Facebook sucks. I've always been open about that. You feel compelled to put so much content - status, photos and wall post conversations or else your profile looks so empty. An empty profile equates into vanilla personality and of course, what an embarrassment that would be. And so, we flood the facebook universe with our pictures, prioritizing those beach trips or those bar nights, just to see the "thumbs up". Thumbs up, yes finally, approval. Plus, you get a lot of notices for things you don't care about and did I mention that the interface is an assault to the senses?
I'd be a liar if I said I never browsed through someone else's Facebook profile for no good reason. I remember looking at someone's profile - 1000+ photos and wall post after wall post. I thought, "Wow, I never knew she was so sociable and apparently, popular". Finally, I was at a night out with her and she didn't do shit but take photos for a good 2 hours and left. In less than 12 hours, her photos got some webspace and some lovin. Yes, Facebook is creating a generation of narcissism.
Yet, we can't live without it. It has innovated the way we communicate and stay in touch, which is a good thing. It is THE one-stop place for messaging, photo albums, updates, events, etc. It paved the way to the obsolesence of texting, email and even Yahoo! Groups. If you don't have an account, you're more or less out of existence. Yeah, we're basically enslaved.
2. Tumblr
Lately, I've been getting a lot of good feedback from Tumblr. It's more or less like livejournal, but it is more generous with multimedia content. The interface is good and allows users to easily manage their content - photos, videos, sound clips, etc. What was stopping me before is that I am attached to the things I've put in my livejournal account. I was afraid that I will get hooked and abandon this. We wouldn't like that, would we?
... but, Tumblr is the modern blogging and is a treasury of interesting multimedia. This is why we have so many emigrants out of livejournal, if they haven't left us for facebook yet.
I completely understood why... so I signed up for a tumblr account. There's nothing in it yet and I've always had second thoughts about cancelling my account. We'll see.
3. Twitter
Freedom of Speech in 140 characters or less!! Twitter is facebook for those with a short attention span. If Facebook is your ideal type of social networking, you'd be "WTF? This is it?" Yes, sorry to disappoint you. The problem with Twitter is that if you're following a shitload of people, get ready to miss out on a lot. Like narcissism is to facebook, twitter is creating a generation of people with bad grammar and bad spelling aka "jejemons wit the jejebet"
The best part about it is that I find that Twitter is the most non-committal. Twenty minutes and you're back to real life - no need to dwell on your online persona. The wide array of applications also helps.
Sometimes, micro-blogging is the best option for people who don't need an entire page to get something across. Brevity is wit... sometimes.
