Abby was on her way out of the café when she bumped into an older, silver-haired man. His resemblance to Gibbs was what made her look twice. They didn’t exactly look related, but there were enough characteristics in common that she couldn’t help but find him attractive. She still had an hour before Gibbs was going to need her back at the lab, so she found herself saying ‘yes’ when he asked her to join him for a cup of coffee.
Gavin Mills, as it turned out, was just three years older than Gibbs. After sustaining an injury in Desert Storm, he’d been honorably discharged. Abby suspected that he worked because he enjoyed being productive, not because he needed to. He had a wonderful sense of humor and kept a smile on her face as the moments passed. He entertained her with amusing stories from his small medical practice and she didn’t even notice when her phone rang half an hour later.
It wasn’t until Gibbs came bursting through the door six and a half minutes later that she realized they had a case.
The look of relief on Gibbs’ face at seeing her unharmed was quickly replaced by a hint of jealousy. He hid it quickly, but that didn’t erase the possessiveness he felt at seeing Abby so wrapped up in someone else. She rarely got so involved in a conversation that she missed a call from him. She knew how important it was to be available 24/7.
She handed her card to Gavin as she left, smiling when he promised to give her a call later in the day. Gibbs just glared at the man. Gavin didn’t seem to care. As long as he was in Abby’s good graces, that was quite enough for him.
Jethro Gibbs was in a terrible mood and he seemed to be the only one not aware of it. He barely noticed the strange looks as he barked more gruffly than normal. He thought he was hiding his jealously well until Tony received his third headslap of the afternoon. That was when Ducky finally took pity on the team and decided to intervene.
“I’d like a word with you, Jethro, if I may,” Ducky began courteously.
“Going to get coffee,” Gibbs replied roughly. “If you want to talk, go ahead.”
Ducky was a man of many talents, surely he could manage to walk and talk at the same time.
“Is something bothering you?” Ducky asked, once the elevator doors closed behind them.
“No.” Gibbs let the word drag on a bit, his expression showing how ridiculous he thought the suggestion was.
“So Tony’s extra head-slaps and your gruffness have nothing to do with the new man our dear Abigail met today?” Ducky asked, obviously not convinced.
“Why do I care who Abby sees?”
“That’s a very good question, Jethro. Given the way you do care and how out of sorts you seem to be this evening, one might think you care more about Abigail than you’re admitting.”
“Of course I care about her,” Gibbs said. “She’s a member of my team. That makes her family.”
“It’s plain to see that there’s more to it than that,” Ducky told him. “You don’t reward Tony for doing his job or bring McGee’s favorite drink to him at least once a day and I don’t think anyone would be amused if you started kissing Ziva’s cheek every time she gave you a good lead.”
Gibbs had a feeling Tony would enjoy Ziva’s reaction, but he had no intention of finding out or mentioning this. Ducky did make an excellent point. Gibbs knew Abby was special, but he didn’t think anyone else had noticed how differently he cared about her.
“We all realize Abby’s special,” Gibbs pointed out as the elevator opened on the ground floor.
“Quite right,” Ducky agreed. “But you two are the only ones who have this unresolved sexual tension.” Well, Tony and Ziva clearly did, but that was another discussion which Ducky needed to have with them, not Gibbs.
“Unresolved sexual tension?” Gibbs rolled his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Supposing you’re right,” which was a big supposition, “what do you expect me to do about it? You saw how happy she was about the fellow in the coffee shop.”
“I haven’t seen the man,” Ducky told him, “but from what I heard about him, he’s very similar to you, Jethro. Abby’s only interested in him because she believes you’re out of reach.”
Gibbs shook his head, sighing. That was ridiculous. Abby was a beautiful young woman, full of life and hope. What could he possibly have to offer her?
Gibbs thought about his friend’s words all afternoon. He started wondering if there was any truth to them. What if Ducky was right? Was it possible that Abby really did care for him as much as he cared for her? The hours passed, but Gibbs barely noticed. Eventually, he looked up and saw that he was the only one left - well, the only one except for Abby.
He saw her step off the elevator and head towards his desk to say good night. Impulsively, he closed the file and when she reached his desk he didn’t wish her a good night or tell her to drive safely as he usually did.
“I was thinking about calling it an early night,” he muttered. “You want to have dinner with me?”
Abby chuckled. “Gibbs, it’s 12:15. Most places are closed. I mean, a lot of clubs are still opened, but that doesn’t really seem like your thing. We could go to one of those places if you want, but have you ever been in one of those places? Of course you’ve been in one, but have you even eaten there? It’s almost impossible to hear anything.”
Gibbs double-checked the clock. Sure enough, she was right.
“Maybe another night,” he said, hopefully.
She smiled. “Or we could find a bottle of bourbon and see what’s in the pantry.” She knew that meant that she would be the one putting dinner together, but she didn’t mind. She always enjoyed her time with Gibbs.
Gibbs almost smiled.
After dinner, Abby fell asleep on the couch. She woke up twenty minutes later, apologizing and starting to gather her stuff when Gibbs stopped her.
“It’s late, Abby. You still have a few things here.”
”I’ll be fine,” she yawned.
He gave her a questioning glance.
“I’m not going to fall asleep at the wheel,” she told him, trying to bite back another yawn.
“I know,” he answered. “You’re not getting behind the wheel until you’ve gotten some sleep.”
They held each other’s gazes. Neither one was willing to back down. She didn’t want to be reminded of how close he was without having him. He wasn’t willing to risk her safety. She finally nodded. He was right. She’d slept at Gibbs’ place so many times it was practically her second home.
She leaned up to kiss his cheek just as he leaned down to kiss hers.
Somehow their lips met and simply couldn’t separate. Their mouths fused together, practically devouring each other. Abby’s soft groans spurred Gibbs on, making him want to take the exploration even deeper. And so he did.
When they finally separated, both were breathing hard.
“Wow,” she murmured. “I think I could get used to that.” Though she couldn’t be certain in the low lighting, it looked like he was blushing.
Her grin was infectious and he found himself smiling as he opened his mouth to reply.
“Glad to hear that, Abby.” And that was the last thing either said for quite some time. Their mouths met again. Having tasted each other once, they were insatiable. When their need for sleep took over, they slept deeply, comfortable and secure in their newfound love.
