so now that's on my list of things to do, which stretches roughly a quarter mile...

Sometimes you have to just stop and smell the flowers. For three days I'm playing host to Derry, and we're doing some of the neat things you can do in and around Toronto.

Yesterday, with the humidex up around 40 celcius, we bopped around a recreation of 1860s Canada. You have to realize, too, that between Hudsons' Bay and the Northwest Mounted, Canada never had a "wild west", though "frontier" would be quite accurate.

Black Creek Pioneer Village contains restored buildings, including a five story water-powered mill and several "gentlemen's residences", log houses and a doctor's house and a church...all heritage buildings rescued from imminent demolition and transported to what was designated a flood plain after Hurricane Hazel in the 50s. Couldn't build residences there, so they built the "Village".

It wasn't really crowded, and the thing Derry mentioned was how well ventilated the houses were. Though it was terribly hot, between the trees and the placement of the windows and doors even the minister's manse, where there was baking going in the wood-fired oven, was tolerable.

I remember, dimly, going to the Village on a school trip when I was in grade 7, but hadn't been back since. It's a remarkable place, and the interpreters are excellent, and the price is reasonable. Recommended for a visit if anyone is in Toronto.

Today is Science Center day - tomorrow to the Falls! Meeting the VideoPrince there for lunch - Bastet knows him, a most excellent friend.
