Haiku # 2
"Between you and me,"
said he, "this world is missing
elements of we."
-Michelle Stafford, Ellipsis 2003
My Space for Grief
(written for Josh)
Being almost a man, I deny you.
Having denied you, I can't ignore you
tap, tap, tapping on my brainskull.
Is that you, making my skin too heavy to wear?
Is that you, writing a song of tears on my face?
Is that dear grief, twisting, twisting my lips
into an ungrinning kiss? Grief, are you biting my eyes?
Needles make me waterblind, making the pull of vision into lead,
anywhere as long as it's down. What's that,
holding my heart, beating muffily? Is it you, grief? Are you
the one making my ears listen like hopeful city projects?
Who is making me burn in an icy alley? Is it you,
Grief?
Being a man, I deny you.
-Samuel Bopp, Ellipsis 2005
Icarus Flight School
I was forewarned
not to fly too close to the sun.
Shoot for a star,
not the best and brightest though,
for surely I will melt away
or go blind.
So I will walk a middle ground,
take the well-trodden path
and land to learn, not to fly.
-Kelly Davison, Ellipsis 2005
Untitled
I fell down and scraped my knee,
it hurt,
you came and I felt better;
you left, and I felt worse.
I began to think
how easy it is for people
To just go away.
-Adam Gajewski, Ellipsis 2005
Deaf Song:
Mother and CODA* Listen to Radio
his throat self hums
voice broken
ripples down
meet my fingertips january.
my son sings, him,
when my other hand deaf
hangs wheel and radio plays.
his eyes stare road-there
and he makes music
with hands.
my eyes sharp see his lips
shape like heart,
now "O."
words he forgets
but continues he hum.
best how hear radio

Broken Stride
It hurts to know I see it
that slight hunch in your stride
the catlike curve of vertabrae
the melting of your pride
the aftermath of brokenness
It's hard to watch you fall
I miss the way you used to walk
You used to walk so tall.
-Emily McNeil, Ellipsis 2006
Untitled Haiku
The lake shuddered at
the convulsing wind that tossed
the dry dirt around
-Rebecca Bowers, Ellipsis 2006
So, as you can see, hopefully, there are some really good pieces in the Ellipsis. And you should buy one or more from Catonsville High. You can email Ms. Egan at megan@bcps.org, and request copies or information from her.
(my poems were clearly posted with my permission, but it took some fenagaling... I totally know how to spell that)
