A Time From Now

Celebrating Just Once a Year - Conversations
***************
Six Months Later - Around Six and One Half Years - New York

They were spread out under an ancient elm, its branches reaching wide and dense, nicely filtering the strong summer sun. Their part of the park was nearly deserted just the way they liked it. He’d provided the soft cotton blanket and the wine coolers they only drank with each other, while Justin had provided Jamey’s leftover chicken salad and sugar-marinated berries. They sat cross-legged, opposite each other with the bulk of the food situated between them. They nibbled contently, time flowing by, just as it should on such an afternoon, unnoticed.

“So y’know? There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you.”

“Oh god --”

“Not something bad, Justin…per se.”

“Not bad…per se?”

“Right. Probably hardly even worth mentioning anymore…man this chicken salad is good.”

“From Jamey’s kitchen to our stomachs.”

“And as it should be. However did I get so fortunate?”

“It’s all about knowing the right people in the right places. He experiments on us, on Mychael and Tristan, on pretty much anyone who’s willing to eat --”

“Like on your Thursday evening crowds?”

“Yeah, like on them.” Justin glanced at him, unsure. “This would be the leftovers.”

“Speaking of Jamey, he’s through school, right?”

“Yeah, all done. What have you been meaning to tell me, Jay…den?”

“Remember Pittsburgh?”

“Vaguely, I vaguely remember Pittsburgh. Hand me the salad, will you? It’s right behind you. Now, do go on,” Justin chuckled while plopping a large portion of various berries soaked in sugar and vanilla with just a dash of cinnamon, on his plate.

“Hungry just a lit --?”

“Jayden.”

“Well, while in Pittsburgh, you…fucked me. That’s all. That…is all.”

“Excuse me?” Justin looked directly at him, for the moment his food forgotten.

“You fucked me, but hey…no biggie. I just thought you should know…maybe. Are there any more rolls? Does he really make these from scratch?”

“Yes he does. Where, at Babylon?”

“Uh…huh, and thanks, these are so --”

“Jayden, I…I don’t remem--”

“Yeah…yeah, I know.” And reminded just then of his other Pittsburgh encounter with them, he added, “I am apparently just not that memorable…by either of you.” The idea of which, when reminded, always bewildered him just a little, but once again, he let it go.

“You have got to be kidding me, not that memorable…yeah right. Look at me, Jayd. You’re fucking beautiful and anyway, what do you mean ‘either of you?”

“Want another cooler?” he asked, anticipating his need.

“I think I’d better,” Justin said, taking the bottle from him. “Why don’t I re--”

“It was during the dark and trying time when you were with Ethan. I was just another fuck.”

“No. I don’t want that.”

“Is what it is, Justin. Not a deal, okay?” He went quiet for a while watching as again Justin took more unwanted information into himself. He watched as he distracted himself by playing with his food, pushing the chicken salad this way, the berries that way, just thinking. ”Jus, we all did it. Whatthehell? We all do it. We all use each other --”

“Did you tell Brian?”

“Yeah, like a zillion years ago or maybe like three and a half, possibly four years ago. I am no longer able to really keep track of such things.”

“So…remind me.”

“Why? There was nothing that unusual, nothing that stellar, about our time in the cum-stained inner sanctum of Babylon‘s backroom. You were a fantastic fuck, alright? End of story.” But noting Justin look of mounting frustration, he relented. “I was standing by that staircase that leads up to the catwalk and you saw me, and just…boom, you walked straight to me, stood right inside my personal space like you belonged there. You looked up at me and said something highly original like, ‘come dance’. You then forcibly grabbed my shirt --”

“And I started walking backwards --”

“Because that’s unusual --”

“No, no. You were wearing a white shirt with…with thin stripes, maybe black --“

“I still have that shirt, you know.”

“No actually, I don’t know, wear it for me next time, and you had on dark, maybe black jeans. So like I said, I started walking backwards, but I bumped into something…a…a --”

“A freakishly large bear that had strategically planted himself right behind you --”

“You grabbed me, stopped me from hitting into him. You laughed and said something like, ‘whoa baby, not so fast, I‘ve got you‘. Right? Yeah, right. You leaned in close and whispered something about Brian, about his not being ’on the premises’. Your exact words, Jayden, I can hear you saying them.” As Justin remembered, his eyes shone and for him, it was a beautiful sight to see. “I said I already knew that. Then I took you to the dance floor and we danced for quite awhile, getting each other all hot and bothered. And sweaty. I remember rutting up against you so hard.” And then with a soft laugh he went quiet, as if suddenly just a little self-conscious.

“Later, I wondered why me, but soon enough I worked it out.” He went quiet then, leaning back, unconsciously away from Justin. He bowed his head and sighed.

“Why do you think?” Justin said, ducking his head trying to find Jayden‘s eyes.

“Because I look like Brian, at least enough to have sufficed. That coupled with the fact that you must have been some pissed at Ethan did make our encounter somewhat impressive, I have to admit.”

“I was pissed at him, but I don’t think I used --”

“Honey, Brian was fucking small blondes like you and you were fucking tall burnets like him. You know it and I know it. It certainly don’t take no brain surgeon to --”

“Alright. You win. Happy?”

“Well no, not really--”

“Before, what did you mean by ’either of you’? What’s Brian got to do with this?”

“It was during those same dark times --”

“Honey…get on with it.”

“Are you always this impatient? This is not necessarily easy for me, okay? Fine…whatever. Brian took me back to the loft --”

“Ouch.”

“Seriously, and he used to be quite the grouchy little bitch when he woke up, didn’t he? Especially when he found a trick still in his bed.”

“You were never a trick to him.”

“The fuck I wasn’t, Justin. We all were. That was the game.”

“This is depressing --”

“If you’re depressed, imagine how --”

“Changing subjects. What made you think I was really pissed at Ethan?”

“The way you took me in the backroom.”

“Hard?”

“Angry.”

“Know what I remember, dropping to my knees and trying to practically eat my way through those black jeans of yours to get at your cock.”

“I didn‘t say it wasn’t good.”

“Then I turned you around --”

“And there was a repeat performance. Fuck it was amazing. You were amazing.”

“Still am.” And even though he didn’t want to, Jayden melted into Justin seductive smile.

Then, as Justin pushed what little remained of lunch aside, Jayden’s heart started beating faster. As Justin crawled across that now uncluttered space to him, kneeling so completely in his personal space, he whimpered just a little. He stared into Justin’s eyes mesmerized.

“It’s been six months since our friendship began and I was just thinking that maybe we should y’know  celebrate or…something, Hummm?”

“I think you’re crazy, things aren‘t complicated enough. You want to ramp this up to something even --”

“Don’t tell me you haven’t thought about it. Don’t tell me you don’t want to. I think you brought up Pittsburgh just so we’d start talking about this--”

“I so did not.” Justin was now beyond in his personal space, they breathed each other’s inhaling and exhaling, theirs lips touched each other lips when they spoke. “We can’t start --”

“Look --”

“Look what, Justin?” faltering, he ran out of words to argue with, realizing that ultimately, resistance really was futile..

“Six months ago I gave your very strange idea a chance and that has worked out fabulously, right? It would seem that the very least you could do is --”

“Alright, alright…what? What is your new and most fabulous idea? Sell it, baby.”

“Once a year. Just…once a year. Starting today, of course, and then on the same day next year and on and on and so on. As long as I know it‘s coming, then I won‘t obsess and I have been, Jayden, I have been thinking about you too much. I think about you with me, I think about you with Brian. It‘s getting a little crazy.”

“I can imagine. Well, actually I know because I think about you too, way too much. Oh, alright, we can give this idea of yours a shot.”

“That wasn’t too difficult.”

“You’re right. I should make this harder for you, since the last thing I want is for you to think I’m too easy, so maybe--”

“Shut Up.”

“Understand, this can’t fuckup what we have, Justin. I need what we already have to continue. If anything gets in the way of that, it‘ll need to stop.”

“You worry too much, Jayden. It’ll be fine.”

And Justin was right. For the next three decades, it will all be just fine.
