Everything is Illuminated ~Jonathan Safran Foer
This book is good, but odd. I read it because I'd seen the trailer for the movie (looks really funny and touching) and have made a resolution that I'd read the books prior to seeing the movies (if they're adapted from books that is!).
Main characters:
Alex -Young, Ukrainian interpreter (Eugene Hutz)
Jonathan -Young, American writer, searching for Augustine who saved his Grandfather's life and researching his family/grandfather's past (Elijah Wood)
Alex's Grandfather -Old, driver-who thinks he's blind, interesting link to Jonathan's grandfather's story (Boris Leskin)
Sammy Davis Junior, Junior -Alex's grandfather's dog
Style:
It's written in three different ways
1. Letters from Alex to Jonathan
2. Alex's story about their search
3. Jonathan's book about his family and his grandfather's life/past
At first it was really odd but I got used to it and it was fun putting the information from Jonathan's book into Alex's and vice versa, it definitely filled in the blanks. Alex's broken english ("and my face gave a high five to the front window") is a hoot and his character seems the most endearing in the movie.
The book is touching, informative, charming and funny. I can't wait to see the movie. Can't find out when the movie will be out in Victoria though...
Ciao,
Danielle
