It's a fair question. The answer to leaving the comfort zone, right now anyway, is both yes and no.
In my stories -- the ones I've written for the Flash Fiction contest and the Kansas Writers contest -- there's no physical hurt. There's pain because in my life, through my eyes, lessons have always been learned through some form of pain. And that's reflected in my writing. But it's not always physical. If you're really bored and would like to see this "different" I speak of, check out my blog: http://gaelicsjourney.blogspot.com/p/about-this-blog.html
Look in August and September of 2010 for the specific pieces I posted there.
However, in fanfiction...I probably won't ever stray too far from physical pain. It's my guilty pleasure, it's fun to write (perhaps disturbing, but true) and it brings me a level of solace and satisfaction. Not only that? I know people like reading it. When I write fanfiction, I write for what I want to read and what I now know people will respond to. And sure, there's varying levels of pain and response. No, they don't have to be on their deathbed or, y'know, bleeding from the eyes or anything.
But just like with any other "fetish" -- and man, there are some strange ones out there -- people look for their personal guilty pleasure and if I'm going to write fanfiction, I'm going to do it the way I know people will respond. And this is the first time I've dared to say that unapologetically. You helped make me brave enough to do so.
Oy, the punctuation. When I get the draft of my novel done, someone is going to have a FIELD DAY with a red pen just attacking my horrid grammatical weaknesses. Don't get me started on the hideousness of homophones. *rolls eyes at self*
Anyhoo, this is me, telling you that I had a good time, and that this is a fabulous read. I hope this brightens your evening a little.
Thank you for this. And it really did. I am dying to just put everything else aside and write. I owe someone a one-shot (which shouldn't be that hard for me to pull off...except I'm getting ideas for everything except what she wants me to write...sigh).
Thank you for taking the time to do this. :)I really appreciate it.
