Oh, man....
Next week is Spring Break and I've been begging -- pleading --
moaning -- threatening -- you get it -- to borrow (only borrow)
a laptop. The computer I have at my mother's place is my old
Mac Performa circa 1995 and I can just barely get my AOL mail
and post to the LJ with it. I also have a laptop that more
than slightly ancient, but fine for backing up my files
and such, but I can't get on the internet at all with it.
So it would so NICE if the department would let me have
something for ONE WEEK. I went in to see our tech guy and
he had a row of brand new shiny lovely Powerbooks lined
up to fill with software for OTHER PEOPLE. They are getting
the use of these for free, BTW, because they are staff or
tenured faculty. They already have older Powerbooks, which
they are turning in to get these new ones. So I said (naively),
"Can I borrow one of the old ones? Please? I'll be good! I've
only worked here for 20 fucking years! PLEASE!" It was pitiful
to see me have to beg -- and all to no avail. I'm out of the
"loop" and not eligible to get one, even to borrow it for
ONE fucking week!
As much as I love my job -- and I'd have to in order to
work for all of these years for less money than the
parking attendants get on this campus (that's not a joke,
either). But sometimes it's beyond frustrating when
I'm only trying to do a very, very simple thing -- like
get my mail while I'm away. I can't on my old machine because
the browser won't accept the SU page that takes you to the
mail.
I apologize for the vent. You can go back to your regularly
scheduled program now.
Thanks.
