When the Lights Go Up
“What time?”
“Show time!”
The band members took their places onstage to the screams and shouts of fans who had waited patiently outside in the rain, some for hours. Excitement and energy rose to the rafters. They were ready.
Shinya took his place behind his kit and looked out over the crowd. He couldn’t help but be amazed. Gackt, and Chacha, and You had tried to explain the special feeling these shows produced, but this was even more intense than he’d ever experienced or imagined. This was a special moment in these fans’ lives, a dream that many of them probably never thought would come true. ”I started this because I wanted to be a part of Gackt’s charity. I wanted to let the world know that even though months have passed, we still need help. And I wanted to thank the fans everywhere for their generosity and their ‘heart’. I never dreamed it would be like this. These people are amazing. They waited for hours in the worst weather, all for a band that most of them were really wary of. I don’t think any of them were happy when the new members were introduced at that press conference. Especially Jon. I know I’m not Jun-ji, but I’ll do everything in my power to give this band and these fans the very best that I can. I just hope I don’t kill myself doing it...”
U:zo took his place. This was it. Their first show. He was ready; he was pumped; he was nervous as hell. He’d been in bands, performed lives, been cheered by fans, but nothing had prepared him for this. This was more than he’d ever allowed himself to dream about. Gackt was a taskmaster, a tyrant, and there were several times when he’d seriously considered dropping out; the training and rehearsal and lifestyle changes were more than he’d bargained for, but right now, this moment, was all that Gackt had promised and more. He could feel the energy, the ‘kiai’ that Gackt always talked about overflowing from the crowd, filling the hall, transforming him, and he wanted nothing more than to give these people everything he possibly could to make this the most amazing concert they’d ever experience. ’Let’s get this party started!’
Takumi looked out over the crowd. He’d never dreamed he’d play in front of a crowd like this, and in Europe of all places! This was a dream come true. He would give the very best performance he could to repay these people for their generosity and enthusiasm, their love and their heart. This was worth every bit of the torture Gackt had put them through to get them to this level, and he wouldn’t let his idol down. ’Bring it on!’
Jon was nervous. No one had ever shared the vocals with Gackt before. He knew a lot of fans were unhappy about that. But they hadn’t heard the music yet; hadn’t heard how this new incarnation energized the songs and made everything fresh and new. ’We’ll give them something to remember all their lives. Let’s go!’
Chacha looked over the audience. The hall was packed. He was tired, and seriously contemplating... not retirement, he wasn’t ready for that, but cutting back, slowing down. But that was a ways down the road yet. They had a tour to finish, and if every venue was as alive and electric as this one, maybe he’d be ready to rethink his decision. He glanced over at Gackt and could see in his eyes that this is exactly what he’d hoped Chacha needed to reenergize him and continue their road together. ’Alright, Satan, let’s do this!’
You was amazed at the reception the band had been given. He’d never really thought this little band would have such a following outside of Japan, especially with so many new additions. But he’d learned over the years that Gackt’s instincts were always spot on, and this was obviously no exception. He looked at Gackt and grinned. ’You were right again. Let’s blow them away!’
Gackt looked out over the crowd. Their energy and passion were overwhelming; more than even he had expected. This is it. This is what made all the hard work and madness worth every minute of pain and frustration and sleeplessness. This is YFC. He glanced around at the band members and could feel the spirit of the band soaring. ’Let’s rock!’
