Birthday Shopping
Gackt found a table in the back of the crowded coffee shop and sat down. He took a sip of his coffee, then opened a small shopping bag, pulling out a gray leather box. He opened the box and held up a silver pendant on a black leather cord. The pendant was an antiqued silver dragon’s head; the mouth was open and held a black cabochon in its jaws which, when held just right, showed flecks of orange in the stone that glowed like flames.
“That’s gorgeous!” Kami said, coming up behind the singer and startling him. He took the pendant from Gackt’s hand. “I promise I’ll be surprised when I open it at the party,” he grinned.
Kami sat down across from the singer and reached for the box. “It’s not quite my taste,” he continued as he laid the necklace in the box, “and, frankly, I’m surprised you waited till the last minute, but it’s really...” He looked up at Gackt, who was staring at the drummer in total shock. “This- isn’t for me, is it.”
Gackt snatched the box back and held onto it tightly. “No, it’s not. What are you doing here?”
“I was passing by and thought I saw you sitting here, so I came in to say hello.” Kami reached over and took Gackt’s cup, taking a sip of his coffee. “Ugh! that’s awful.” He shuddered and gave the coffee back.
Gackt stared down at the box, still holding it tightly. Kami had never seen the young, brash, cocky, self-confident man look so unsure of himself.
“That’s for your friend, isn’t it,” Kami said softly. “I’m sorry. I forgot You’s birthday is coming up. I’m sure he’ll love it.”
Gackt sighed and frowned. “I’m not so sure. We didn’t part on the best of terms. I’m not even sure he’ll accept it.”
Kami’s smile softened. He laid a hand on top of Gackt’s. “It’s been a year, Gacchan. If he’s all that you’ve said he is, he’ll love it. And if he doesn’t...” Kami shrugged, “then he didn’t deserve you to begin with. Isn’t it best to find out now? Cut your losses and move on?”
Gackt sighed again as he slid the box back into its bag. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
Kami smiled. “I know I’m right.” He stood up and held out his hand. “Now. Come on, we’re going shopping for my gift. I’ll pick out something really extravagant, and you can surprise me with it at the party.”
“You don’t have to help me spend my money.” Gackt followed the drummer out of the cafe. “I already have your gift.” He could feel his mood begin to lighten. Leave it to Kami to know exactly how to put everything into perspective for him.
Kami grinned. “Good. Then we’ll go shopping anyway, and when we’re done I’ll take you some place where you can buy me something that’s worth drinking.”
