FREEDOM

“Why don’t you guys come down?” Gackt asked brightly. He missed his lovers terribly, and although the play would soon be over, he wanted to see them now; and he wanted them to see the play.

“Uhh, well, I don’t know,” You said hesitantly. He looked at Chacha who was lying on the couch cocooned in a quilt despite the warm weather. We’re pretty busy here....”

Chacha held out a shaking hand for the phone; You handed it over. “Gaku, we love you, but we can’t possibly come now. We’re too busy here, and I am definitely too tired,” he said in a weak, raspy voice. He took the phone from his ear and flipped it shut. The end.

“You didn’t have to be so abrupt, Cha,” You said.

“Well, I am too sick to travel,” Chacha snapped. His head was reeling, and he could barely focus his eyes behind his sunglasses. “I’m going back to bed,” he said weakly. He stood up shakily and slowly made his way back to bed, dragging the quilt behind him.

You sighed and finished making a pot of tea. He carried it to the bedroom only to find Chacha already sound asleep.
~~~~~~~
Gackt hurried to get ready to leave for the theater. The last performance was tonight, and he wanted to be ready to leave as soon as it was over. “Kaz, I’m leaving right after tonight’s performance, so take care of my bags for me, ok?”
“Sure, but why the hurry?”
“I don’t trust You and Cha not to be planning some elaborate Halloween joke, and I want to get home as soon as possible,” he explained. But what he didn’t explain was the worry that he’d picked up in You’s voice, and the abruptness and odd sound of Chacha’s voice. Something was going on, and his senses told him he needed to be home. Once he got to the train station he could be home in less than three hours.
A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. A bellman handed him a long package. His eyes lit up in delight. He carried it over to the desk and opened it carefully.
“What is it?” Kaz asked looking over his shoulder.
“A gift from a friend. He said it was finished, and he was sending it here. I’ve been waiting almost a year for this.” He unfolded layer after layer of bubble wrap to reveal a long cloth bag containing a katana. He pulled the sword from its scabbard, the light reflecting off the highly polished blade. “It’s beautiful,” he murmured.
“Is it real?” Kaz asked.
“Yes, very,” Gackt replied. He picked up a piece of paper that laid on the desk and sliced it like butter.
Gackt quickly took off his makeup and changed into his clothes, picked up the katana he’d brought with him and left for the train station. He’d never thought about how he would carry a 3-foot katana on the train, but, fortunately, his celebrity and reputation for being a bit- quirky- made it seem totally normal, and he had no trouble at all. He found his seat, closed his eyes, and before he knew it he was home. He hailed a cab outside the station. It was late, and even though Tokyo never really slept, it seemed to take no time at all to arrive at his door.
~~~~~~~

Chacha slid quietly out of bed so as not to disturb his sleeping lover. He crept silently to the living room and stopped, doubled over in pain. Stifling an excruciating moan he felt his body stretch and morph into the being that had overtaken him. The entity that had been Cha glanced back at the bedroom and listened carefully. He’d already made the mistake of letting the other man see him in this form, and he was lucky to have been able to influence him to believe it was a dream. Hearing no sound he opened the door to disappear into the night. As he hurried through the gate a car came down the street, and he quickly sought the safety of the shadows of some tall trees.

As Gackt got out of the cab he caught movement out of the corner of his eye, it looked like a ghost had disappeared into the trees. He turned back toward the house and almost got run over by You. “What the....!”

“Gacchan!” You cried. “Come on, let’s go!”

“What? Where?!”

“Come on, follow him!”

“Who?”

“That thing!” You yelled over his shoulder. He raced out to the street searching for the specter. “There! Come on!” he shouted and took off down the street.

Gackt caught up to the tall violinist, and as they moved quickly down the street trying to keep sight of the apparition in front of them, You tried to explain what happened. He explained about Chacha’s illness, about the dream, about Cha’s transformation into whatever it was they were following, and his inability to stop it.

They followed the figure for several blocks. It looked like a man, tall, with long straight hair; dressed in dusty looking clothes. The man, if indeed that’s what it was, seemed almost phosphorescent, as he seemed to almost glow in the dark of the night.

They came to an intersection and looked about, unsure of which way to go. Suddenly an alarm rang out. They looked and saw the figure walk into a house several meters down the street. They ran to catch up, only to be stopped by the police who had been summoned by the alarm.
~~~~~~~
The being that had been Chacha moved quickly through the house and opened a door that led into a library. The walls were lined with books and displays of artifacts of ancient Egyptian culture. He walked over to a case and broke the glass with his hand, taking a pair of wide gold bracelets engraved with two crossed arrows over a shield.
“Who, who are you?” a shaking voice asked.
The man turned to confront a small man standing in the doorway, a gun in his hand.
“I am Bes, protector of my lady *Neith.”
“You are a thief, stealing my property!” the homeowner challenged.
“No. You are the thief. These bracelets are mine, given to me by my lady when she allowed me to follow her in death as her protector. You did not heed the warnings. You stole from my lady, and you will pay.” The being raised one hand and walked toward the frightened man. Shots rang out.
~~~~~~~

One of the officers grabbed You by the arm. Gackt yelled at them that they were arresting the wrong people. An argument started, then gunshots rang out from inside the house. Everyone ran into the house following the sound of the shots. They stopped at the door of the library and stared in disbelief.

The homeowner fired several more shots at the glowing form that moved toward him, but the bullets passed through the form trailing a spray of glowing powder.

A muffled cry of agony sounded from within the eerie form, but he continued to move forward. The smaller man gaped in horror, emitting an agonizing scream that was cut short as the tall form grabbed him by the throat and crushed his trachea. The body dropped to the floor, and the ancient man turned away.

More shots rang out as the police began to fire. The thing turned to look at them, and Gackt saw Chacha’s pleading eyes staring at him in agony. “Kill me, Gacchan,” he begged, “kill me.” Then the man turned and continued to walk away.

Gackt unsheathed his katana, tossing the scabbard aside. Holding it in both hands, he gave a mighty cry and raced forward, swinging the katana with all his strength.

The form of the ancient man was severed almost in half. Everyone stared in stunned horror. You fell to his knees and began to cry, “Chacha,” he whispered. Gackt stood motionless over the body, not believing what he’d just done. The body on the floor began to crumble into phosphorescent dust. The dust traveled on the lightest of unseen breezes up into the air and disappeared, leaving behind Chacha’s fallen body.

“Chacha!” Gackt cried. He knelt on the floor and cradled the motionless body to his heart, rocking back and forth as tears streamed down his face.

Several minutes passed and You came over to kneel beside them. He threw his arm around Gackt’s shoulders and stroked Chacha’s hair. And then he realized something. Chacha wasn’t bleeding! He was breathing. He was alive! “Gacchan,” he whispered, “he’s alive.” He began to laugh as tears filled his eyes.

EPILOGUE

Two weeks had passed, and Chacha was finally home from the hospital. He leaned back in the deep water of the bath, thoroughly enjoying the relaxing warmth. The only sign left from his ordeal was the mark on his shoulder- a deep scar that looked like it had been carved into his body; a scar in the shape of an ankh, the Egyptian symbol of eternal life.
